Yesterday afternoon my car wouldn't start.  When I turned the key I got that click-click-click-click noise commonly associated with a dead battery.  So I got a jump, drove home, tried to charge the battery only to find that it was well and truly dead, and bought a new one.  Problem solved, right?  I dove to the beach last night (radio blasting and headlights on) and then probably another 50 miles today, all with no problems.  Problem solved.

 

Not.

 

Now the battery is dead again, which means the alternator is not working.  So, after spending nearly seven weeks in the shop getting a new engine, it needs to go back again.  But I guess I shouldn't complain, after all I did get nearly two whole weeks of driving out of it.

yea, alternator.. no biggie. you could prob do it yourself, but I think you have a foreign car, so don't bother, too much work.

 

but.. it could also be your battery not holding a charge.. when did you last get a new battery? you can figure it out easy if its dead if you have a meter.

Yeah I looked for it today.  I found it.  I ain't changing it!  Basically you need the car up on a lift to get to it.

 

Nah, I know an alternator is no biggie, really, but I just shelled out $2200 getting it running again (plus another hundred for the new battery), and now, right after finally getting it back, it back it already has to go back to the shop.  It does not bode well.

I did not buy a Saab.  I went to look at one but I did not end up buying it.  I expect you to pay much closer attention to the minutiae of my life.  >(

chuck a meter on your battery..start the car..  if it doesn't move past 10+, you need a battery.

 

if your battery is 5+ years old, it's time for another one.

I already did that last night.  This was a brand new battery that went dead in 24 hours.  That means the alternator isn't charging.

 

It was the original battery from when I bought the car, by the way, so nearly eight years old.  That's why I figured everything was fixed when I put the new one in.  Silly me.

 

And Alyster, Saabs haven't been real Saabs in twenty years, even the most n00b Swedophile knows that.  And Volvos are, unfortunately, out of my price range.  Heh.

It can still be charging when your generator is broken and produces too high voltages it will very very quickly kill any new battery and electrical  gadgets.

Follow-up:  The car went to the mechanic Monday morning, and by 1:00 pm it was fixed, the alternator rebuilt.  And it didn't even cost me anything.
