Yea, like I said.. we're way past the 8'th generation. Consoles existed way before those. You can't just ignore other consoles because people are young.

It's like saying well I'm only X years old because Nintendo came out X years ago.

Haf, selling used PC games is not illegal..  where would you get that idea?

In Canada, it's a violation of the Copyright Act. Any used computer software is presumed to have been installed on the seller's computer and so selling it is illegal.

Dumb.

In the US, it's legal, as long as you transfer all backup copies with the original.

Renting PC software is also illegal here, same reason.

I'm not a fan of our Copyright Act. The US used to have a very good copyright law, unfortunately then you guys decided to join the Berne Convention and it's been all downhill from there. Still most of the US' really stupid laws are connected to telecommunications, not copyright; as witness the unfortunate case of Bernie S, the guy who did 2 years of federal time for possession of a screwdriver.

No, Bernie S. Goetz did a lot more than just own a screwdriver, lol. (Goetz was a vigilante, not a hacker.)

This is Bernie S' Wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernie_S

He was sentenced to two years' imprisonment in 1995 for possession of technology which could be used in a fraudulent manner. The technology in question was a screwdriver.

What are you counting as the first generation of consoles?  Because it seems to be that technically there have been a lot more than eight generations.  An excellent case could be made that the first console was the Atari 2600 in 1977.

Yeah I don't know what generations are in the console world. I mean, for humans, a generation is 20 years, so that would make us now early in the second generation I guess.

All consoles from the 2600 until the PS1 used ROM cartridges to load software. The PS1 changed all that by introducing optical media. Then the XBox introduced the idea of a console having fixed random-access storage (i.e. a hard drive). Other than that there hasn't really been any radical changes, just better graphics and different controllers. So I guess I still think of us as being in the second generation; modern consoles (with the arguable exception of the Wii, because it has a different controller) are generally just souped-up descendants of the PS1.
