I can't fault Haf's logic, because I do love lightsabers.  But time machines > lightsabers.  :)

You can turn a wall into a door with a lightsaber. Also you can carry it in a pocket. Nothing beats lightsabers. B-)

Haf definitely has a point here. Lightsabers are pretty awesome.

If you had a TARDIS, you could either travel to the other side of the wall, or go back in time to before the wall existed.

If you had a lightsaber, you could kill the time lord, again and again, until he/she ran out of regenerations.

Also, you could cut the tardis in half.

Also, you can't put the TARDIS in your pocket.

I mean, I love Doctor Who, well some of it, it's a great show. But lightsabers!

I do love lightsabers, don't get me wrong.  But if it's a choice between a time machine or a lightsaber, there's no contest.  It's got to be the time machine.  You can just do so much more with it.  Including travel to a future where lightsabers exist and get one.  :)

And of course you could put a TARDIS in your pocket.  The Doctor's TARDIS did not have a functioning chameleon circuit, remember.  A working TARDIS can take any shape, including that of something which could fit in your pocket (obviously you'd better have some way to reverse this, however, or you're never getting inside).

But more to the point...  TIME TRAVEL!

Still, I appear to be in the minority, and by a good margin.  Jedi leads Time Lord 11-5.  Still, I wonder if that has more to do with the relative popularity of the two franchises?

Seriously, TIME TRAVEL!!!

*sigh*

Well, of course I'm assuming that they are parallel universes. The Star Wars universe has Jedi and lightsabers, while the Doctor Who universe has Time Lords and Daleks. The Doctor Who universe people can't timetravel to get lightsabers because they're in the wrong universe to start with.

Multiverse theory makes this probable, and if I remember rightly, a certain blonde companion of The Doctor happens to live in an alternate universe. Who's to say the Star Wars universe isn't accessable to the Who universe?

Actually the Doctor cannot easily travel to parallel universes.  It's a big deal when he does.  Rose is indeed in a a parallel universe but the Doctor can never see her again.  One of the premises of the DW brand of time travel is that you are sort of stuck in your own timeline, barring something major happening.  That's why the Doctor usually can't meet his past selves.

As for lightsabers, give me a break.  Star Wars was not the first or the last SF universe to feature energy blades.  :P

Yes, but they are the most awesome energy blades ever.

This reminds me of an old story of mine. About twenty years ago, when I lived in Halifax, I used to know a guy who went by the BBSing nick of The Lump. Now, he was a gamer, but also a serious bodybuilder, which was an odd combination to be sure and was the reason why he was called that. Anyway, The Lump liked Star Wars and had the Star Wars RPG, well, different from the modern Star Wars RPGs but back then there was just the one. One day he came by my place and ran a game of it for me and a few other BBS guys, and I think my current girlfriend at the time too. I forget.

Back in these days I should say that it was an incredibly common occurence for someone to just drop in and run something at my place. When gamer friends of mine showed up randomly, I would be all wanna play something or watch some Star Trek or whatever, and would make up adventures for them out of my head if they wanted to game and there was nothing prepped. Anyway, Lump wasn't like that, he prepared this game, which may be why there was only one session of it, because gaming at my house just didn't run on schedule back then.

Anyway I played a Jedi of course. At about the third wall I had chopped down with my lightsaber in the adventure, Lump just chuckled and made a remark about Jedi players loving their glowing swords, like this was something that always happened every time you ever ran this game. I can believe it. B-)

Even without knowing much of the extended DW or SW, I choose Time Lord, since I thought that would be more fun.

Space Opera with light swords is cool and all, but the TL option seems to offer more possibilities for exploration. Not to mention the humor & carefree-ness (to an extent, at least personally), The Doctor seems to hold. Seems like a pretty sweet gig.

I mean, if I could honestly choose, I would be some girl with a towel in the universe from the Hitchhikers Guide. It's infinitely fun.

Barring that, lighting, immortality and lightsabers.

Jedi is winning because people are dazzled by the idea of flashy light swords, and not thinking through the full implications of having a goddam time machine!!!
