Lol Malaysian Airways might as well shut down because they will never get customers again.

Both Russia and Ukraine are just starting a giant pissing contest and will continue to do so for quite a while. Neither wants a war despite what Thrash says. There is a huge difference between 3rd world-esque Georgia and NATO backed Ukraine.

16:50:

An advisor to the Ukrainian interior minister, Anton Gerashenko, says the plane was flying at an altitude of 10,000 metres (33,000 feet) when it was "hit by a missile fired from a Buk launcher", in a post on his Facebook page, according to the Associated Press.

To be fair I'm sceptical on anything Ukraine has said since regime change, the amount of stuff they have said regarding Russia that has turned out to be complete horse shit is a joke. Though ironically Ukraine has a fair few Buk launchers.

Both Russia and Ukraine are just starting a giant pissing contest and will continue to do so for quite a while. Neither wants a war despite what Thrash says. There is a huge difference between 3rd world-esque Georgia and NATO backed Ukraine.

Ukraine is as backed by NATO as Georgia was, afterall the Georgian forces were heavily equiped in American gear...ie: both helped by NATO members and both not backed militarily by NATO members.

Ukraine has nothing to gain from shooting down the jet. Russia however can use it as an excuse to claim Ukraine as a no fly zone or go in with ground frorces. However you're overthinking here. Preety sure it was a simple human error that will cost the Donetsk rebels dearly.

The Donetsk rebels posted on Twitter few days ago that they have acquired BUK missile system for their air space defense. They even posted pictures. Today the post was deleted ofcourse, but thank god for Google Cache. http://webcache.goog...248037629018112

Just before the news started to circulate that the Flight 17 had gone down, the leader of Donetsk rebels was boosting on VKontakte (russian social media network) that they had shot down a Ukrainian An-26 transportplane. He said that the location is 40 kilometers East from the city of Donetsk. Ofcourse as soon as international media started posting that Flight 17 crashed just East from Donetsk he deleted the post. Link1 Link2 Link3

Russia armed rebels against Ukraine with high tech equipment. The lads fucked up, big time. Now Ukraine has an excuse to go all out on the rebels and will probably mop up the situation swiftly with the backing of international community. To restore law and order and bring mass-murderers to justice.

I am inclined to agree with Alyster's assessment. I don't think it's likely that either the Ukrainian or Russian governments planned this attack.

I think Alyster has the truth of it.  The international hue and cry from this is going to be enormous.  I wouldn't be surprised to see Russia wash its hands of the Donetsk separatists and walk away.  They'll keep Crimea, though.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I think will happen. Russia will just be "Welp, lads you're on your own."

Like how everyone automatically thinks the rebels based on nominal evidence, as I said in the other topic Ukraine's military has shot down a civilian airliner before.

So have the Russians back in 1983. The man giving the order was latter highly decorated.

Indeed, but I'm not the ones pointing the finger without any solid evidence, people here are automatically pointing to the rebels on whose word? the Ukrainians.

Anyway we will soon know as satellites would of picked up the signature trail of the fired missile IF it was one.

Russian Defense Ministry Says Intercepted Ukrainian Radar Activity on Day of Plane Crash

“Throughout the day on July 17, Russian means of radar surveillance intercepted the operation of the Buk-M1 battery’s Kupol radar station located in the region of the populated area of Styla [30 kilometers south of Donetsk],” the press service said in a statement.

“The technical capabilities of the Buk-M1 allow the exchange of data on air targets between batteries of one battalion. Thus, the launch of rockets could have also occurred from any of the batteries deployed in the populated area of Avdeevka [8 kilometers north of Donetsk] or from Gruzsko-Zoryanskoe [25 kilometers east of Donetsk],” the ministry said.
