Wow, isn't that an interesting thing to be typing?

Well, it happened. America made a truly brave choice to step away from the status quo today, and I'm shocked they did it. I mean, I shouldn't be, it was fairly clear to all involved with any clear view on the game that the Democrats made a bad choice with Clinton, but I guess some of us, myself included, wanted a woman to be "the most powerful person on earth" sooooo bad that we ignored or minimalised everything else. Trump honestly scares me, too, but he's the US president, not the Australian president. I'd say we don't even have one, but that's not true, it's just a symbolic role for us. Anyway, side track, back to the point.

2016 has seen two massive blows to globalisation, which hurts me a lot, I love globalisation, I grew up believing in cyberpunk futures where countries didn't matter, I grew up in a multicultural society where everyone was just people, with different beliefs and cultures, and nobody really cared. Nationalism makes no sense to me. But it makes sense to a lot of people clearly, in both the UK and the US, and I guess the rest of us just have to deal with that.

So yeah, well done Republicans, swing voters, independents, etc. You did it, you broke the system. I'm just a little glad that people can break it, makes me feel vaguely hopeful. And now you've got a bonafide President Trump (not yet, he's still just elect, but pshhh you know it'll happen). So, I guess this thread is both a "woo yeah, you did it", as well as a discussion on what we think happens next.

I'm expecting trans rights to be dead as of... right now. I'm a little unsure, but I think the right swing of the supreme court that's inevitable now coooould result in some reverses as of late, pro-lifer policies would be much harder to counter now, so I expect that to start happening in the south again... but could it also be possible to bump creationism into schools or bump off gay marriage? I mean those would be Pence's big plays, but I dunno if that's like a double jeopardy thing, or just mass fearmongering wafting in from the left. They'd have to legislate for it, that's for sure. But yeah, lemme know what you think, I'm intrigued.

I'm not for any of this, I'm strongly against this, I'm actually fairly bewildered... but to be honest, the US is not my country, the US people are not my people. What you choose to do is your choice, I've said my part and the decision has been made. And, in all honesty:

Congratulations on defeating the establishment.

Rights for everyone who isn't white and heterosexual are pretty much dead in the water now. As for me, I'm done. No more politics, no more giving a shit. I'm out. My insides are dead. The depression that has been plaguing me all year was finally starting to lift, but no more. I congratulate Trump on a race well run. He obviously knew what he was talking about. He was right on every turn. I am glad that my friends, like Thrash, are happy, even if I think that happiness will be short-lived. But there is no place for me in Trump's America. This was my last election.

The fact that you're giving up now says a lot about you.   Just because you lose doesn't mean you give up on what you believe are the right things.

I'm looking forward to the shakeup in Washington, hopefully it leads to good things.

Obviously what I believe are the right things don't matter. The world wants something else. At some point you no longer have any fight left in you.

You guys won. Enjoy it. You earned it.

What people want is for the government to actually work again and not forget the middle class.   Its not a you v me, Trump will be our president, he deserves at least a chance to lead, that is my 2 cents.

Also just for clarification, I never supported Trump, seems like you think I did.

Oh I just assumed you did based on your response.

It doesn't really matter whether he "deserves a chance to lead" or not. He's going to get one. Deserve's got nothing to do with it. Nothing I do will make any difference, certainly. But it is absolutely a you vs. me (figuratively) thing. That's literally what his whole campaign was based on. And he's a vindictive, mean-spirited man who has a long history of going after those he believes have wronged him. I sincerely doubt anything will get better, in fact I think it will get much, much worse. I'm quite literally despondent over this.

There's a lot here, and I have a lot of thoughts about it so I'll be chopping this bad boy up into some pieces.

we ignored or minimalised everything else.

It was by far the elitist rhetoric that marginalized and belittled the concerns of conservative Americans that led Trump to the white house. Not only did they fail to give any real, believable reason not to vote for Trump - instead hauling out the tired old "bigot" card that they'd already exhausted to give us 8 years of Obama - but they failed to give any real positive reasons to vote for Hillary. They made it a race of negatives, and it just so happened that the negatives on Hillary's scale outweighed the negatives on Trump's. Side note, but did anyone get the sense that they were losing when they pulled out that 10 year old recording? I felt like if that was the best they had, hoo boy were they already in deep trouble.

Trump honestly scares me

Don't buy the hype from either side. Trump will neither be as good nor as bad as people have claimed, myself included. I don't think most of the people who voted for Trump, even the ones who were online every day spouting everything you all saw actually believes he is some savior who will lead America into a utopian paradise in the next four years. What I've seen from people just like myself is sober reflection and realism. The money, the media, the politicians. Everything was stacked against Trump in the most poisonously vehement way possible. The only way to bring this about was to get hyped and whipped up over it but I believe most of his supporters hold no delusions. Even while they gloat at and mock the feverish Clinton supporters who continue to carry on with their invective, lessons unlearned, they readily acknowledge that Trump's presidency will likely be a lukewarm and mediocre one. I'd like to draw a parallel here. Democrats saw Obama as a savior and Republicans went so far as to posit that he may be the antichrist during the two election cycles in which he ran. At the end of the day, Democrats carried on in a frenzy drunk on victory. By contrast, Trump's supporters already are coming down from the high that they've had to maintain this past year and accepting reality as it likely is. They're not coming to lynch you. They're reflecting.

I believe the underlying principles of nationalism aren't so foreign to you, Redezra. At its heart, nationalism is about the belief that people are different and that that isn't always a bad thing so long as it's recognized and approached in a way that allows people of various cultures and values to live in peace with people who share their culture and values. When you force people to be the same and try to fit them into boxes, you start having problems. Just think about how you suffered and were marginalized by an education system that found you incompatible with the pigeonholes it wanted to put you in. That is how globalism affects huge portions of the population wherever it rears its ugly head and that is what the nationalism of today despises.

I don't see it honestly. There's support for trans rights among many of the people I've seen supporting Trump. Will the process be slowed? Probably, but I still think they're happening and what you'll get is something more people can agree on as sensible and that leaves far fewer people feeling left behind and disenfranchised by the whole deal... and isn't that really a big portion of what the metaphorical pendulum is about? What I see happening is a slower, more thoughtful, more collaborative and respectful approach rather than the farcical circus that modern feminism and social justice has brought us.

I'm not for any of this, I'm strongly against this, I'm actually fairly bewildered... but to be honest, the US is not my country, the US people are not my people. What you choose to do is your choice, I've said my part and the decision has been made. And, in all honesty:

There's a post from the chans that's been on my mind a lot since the election was finally called for Donald Trump. It was about Brexit, but the sentiment was much the same as the one I'm sure many Americans felt when Trump won. It talked about something I touched on above. That all the money, media, and political clout was against these things. I'll end on just a short quote from the last bit of it.

"The people wanted it, lads. And the people won."

In other news, Massachusetts legalized marijuana so at least we can finally get some good weed on the east coast to smoke while we watch our country burn. Besides that, RIP us poor people. Even more trickle down economics and cuts to welfare and food stamps, no raise to minimum wage and possibly losing health insurance. At least we can count on the magical manufacturing jobs that trump promised, which will probably be automated within two years of those jobs returning here. Well... Could always join the military and fight in whichever war we'll have next.

Here is the list of things trump said he will do as POTUS

We can check them off as he completes them. :P

A few scary items listed. The guy is a nutjob. :D

(copied/pasted from another site. Any errors were copied too)  :P :D

Build the wall & make Mexico Pay for it.

Were going to say Merry Christmas again.

Get rid of Common Core

EPA to be possibly abolished for state oversight

Replace Obamacare

Knock down the regulatory walls between states for health insurance.

Rebuild the country's aging infrastructure

Save Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security without cutting benefits.

Defund Planned Parenthood.

Mandate & enforce a equal pay for women program

Temporarily ban entry of Muslims from known waring areas until properly vetted.

Set up a Safe Zone for Syrian refugees

Heavily surveil mosques in the United States.

Create a database of Syrian refugees

Never take a vacation while serving as president.

Prosecute Hillary Clinton

Medical marijuana allow states to decide if they want to fully legalize pot or not.

Stop spending money on space exploration until the United States can fix its potholes. Encourage private space-exploration companies to expand.

Pick Supreme Court justices who are "really great legal scholars."

Strengthen the military

Allow Russia to deal with the Islamic State in Syria

"Bomb the s--- out of ISIS."

Target and kill the involved relatives of terrorists.

Shut down parts of the Internet so that Islamic State terrorists cannot use it to recruit American children.

Bring back waterboarding if needed

Leave troops in Afghanistan because it's such "a mess." Protect Israel. And increase U.S. military presence in the East and South China Seas.

Find an "out" clause in the Iran deal and then "totally" renegotiate the whole thing.

Negotiate (not ransom) the release of all U.S. prisoners held in Iran before taking office.

Drop that "dirty, rotten traitor" Bowe Bergdahl out of an airplane into desolate Afghanistan without a parachute.

Fire "the corrupt and incompetent" leaders of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs

Invest more heavily in programs that help military veterans transition back to civilian life

Bring back jobs from China -- and Mexico, Japan and elsewhere.

"I will be the greatest jobs president that God ever created."

Aggressively challenge China's power in the world by declaring the country a currency manipulator, adopting a "zero tolerance policy on intellectual property theft and forced technology transfer" and cracking down on China's "lax labor and environmental standards."

Replace "free trade" with "fair trade." Gather together the "smartest negotiators in the world," assign them each a country and renegotiate all foreign trade deals.

Put billionaire hedge fund manager Carl Icahn in charge of trade negotiations with China and Japan, and pick an ambassador to Japan who is "a killer," unlike the current ambassador, Caroline Kennedy.

Tell Ford Motor Co.'s president that unless he cancels plans to build a massive plant in Mexico, the company will face a 35 percent tax on cars imported back into the United States.

Force Nabisco to once again make Oreos in the United States.

Impose new taxes on many imports into the country.

Grow the nation's economy by at least 6 percent.

Reduce the $19 trillion national debt by "vigorously eliminating waste, fraud and abuse in the federal government, ending redundant government programs and growing the economy to increase tax revenues."

Cut the budget by 20 percent by simply renegotiating.

Get rid of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act.

Simplify the U.S. tax code and reduce the number of tax brackets from seven to four.

No longer charge income tax to single individuals earning less than $25,000 per year or couples earning less than $50,000.

Allow corporations a one-time window to transfer money being held overseas

Get rid of most corporate tax loopholes or incentives, but continue to allow taxpayers to deduct mortgage interest and charitable donations from their taxes.

On his first day in office, Trump would get rid of gun-free zones at military bases and in schools.

Use "common sense" to fix the mental health system and prevent mass shootings.

Impose a minimum sentence of five years in federal prison for any violent felon who commits a crime using a gun, with no chance for parole or early release.

Fix the background check system used when purchasing guns to ensure states are properly uploading criminal and health records.

Allow concealed-carry permits to be recognized in all 50 states.

Sign an executive order calling for the death penalty for anyone found guilty of killing a police officer.

Provide more funding for police training.

And provide more funding for drug treatment.

On the first day in office, terminate President Obama's executive orders related to immigration. This includes getting rid of "sanctuary cities" that Trump says have become refuges for criminals.

Deport the almost 11 million immigrants illegally living in the United States.

Triple the number of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers.

End birthright citizenship.

Well that's interesting the Republicans getting a full house of control, so to speak with President / Senate / House.

But before people start panicking Trump is only as strong as the Republican party let's him become. Considering he has an open revolt on his hands it will be hard for him to pass things through congress until he get his party support back in order.

"Here is the list of things trump said he will do as POTUS"

There are two items on this list that I do not vehemently oppose.

I'm actually more scared of what congress - now unchecked other than by courts - is going to do in the next two years.  Mitch McConnell and the rest of his geriatric, racist, white, male, theocrat colleagues are going to try to make America return to the '50s.   Keep in mind that I am an old, white, male, southern, [former] Republican when I say, these guys scare me more in the short run.

Drumpf's Supreme Court nominations scare me the most in the long run, since the three most likely retirees are all liberals.  His nominees could lock the Court into a fundamentalist orientation for decades.

Oh, and Slimshady:  sorry to burst your bubble but the Dept. of Justice will start busting dispensaries next year.  Just hope that your's has a burn bag for patient records.  Legal weed was tolerated by the O'bama administration, but Mike Pence won't stand for that flagrant sinful behavior.
