On the basis of your results, we estimate you know 56% of the English words.
You said yes to 69% of the existing words.
You said yes to 13% of the nonwords.
This gives you a corrected score of 69% - 13% = 56%.
This is fairly high level for a native speaker.

You said yes to 81% of the existing words.
You said yes to 23% of the nonwords.
This gives you a corrected score of 81% - 23% = 58%.

You said yes to 74% of the existing words.
You said yes to 3% of the nonwords.
This gives you a corrected score of 74% - 3% = 71%.

You said yes to 79% of the existing words.
You said yes to 13% of the nonwords.
This gives you a corrected score of 79% - 13% = 66%.

I love that it breaks your results down so much for you (usually they might take this data, but not let you see it).

-Words you did not know
-Nonwords you responded YES to
-Words you knew
-Nonwords you responded NO to

For example one of the nonwords I said yes to in my final test was "lonnel". Which I honestly only said yes to because I (incorrectly) thought of Lionel trains. There were less than a handful of words that I know I incorrectly marked (either I knew them and hit NO or didn't know them and hit YES). But I'm good with taking an average, so I know 60% of the English language (according to this test).

I thought the amount of hyphenated words was a bit much. For example I got "crackbrained" as a word, that I did answer yes to, so I got the point, but it just seems odd. Like it's not proper english. Knowing what the test is testing for helps. I feel just taking the test once, I was able to change how I answered and my score for existing words went down (I basically lowered my threshold for answering 'yes' on instinct. If I saw a word I didn't explicitly knew, but I felt was english subconsciously I would hit yes), but I also brought down my incorrect score by not saying yes to so many nonwords (same deal. I held a higher standard for testing my own explicit knowledge vs. just thinking something looked like english and hitting yes).

I'm sure my score (and most everyone's) would go real down if you had to define these words. Even more so if you were not choosing from a multiple choice but it was a free form answer.

Even still, I really like the test. English is still the best language.

My goal is currently to beat Jorost.

Heh. Have you taken it more than once? I just assumed it would be the same results but maybe I'll try again. I tend to have a risk-averse style of test taking, as evidenced by the fact that I did not say yes to any of the nonwords. Basically, if I wasn't 100% sure I said no.

My goal is currently to beat Jorost.

Does the test use new words each time? Otherwise it seems more like memorization than actual knowledge.

Yes. It takes the 70 words from 2 banks of words (real and nonwords). So it's a different test each time*.

*except for the random chance of getting the same words

But yea, that was exactly my point Jorost. Using a different style (risk aversion basically) nets different results. It's also interesting that it gives you your reaction time (in seconds) to each word. So you could really break down your thought pattern and look at your gut reaction vs. allowing yourself to think on something.

You said yes to 77% of the existing words.

You said yes to 0% of the nonwords.

This gives you a corrected score of 77% - 0% = 77%.

This is a high level for a native speaker.

This was actually really hard. Some of the words I missed, was due to me spelling it a different way. It's like a grey/gray thing, but I didn't recognize the other spelling.

Also didn't know it was timed.

Spoiler

Okay, so I took it again, and this time I tried to be less risk-averse. Instead of automatically saying no to the ones I didn't immediately recognize I took a moment to try and decide whether I thought it was a word. Interestingly I still didn't misidentify any nonwords as words. Me talk good English.

Averaging 1-2 seconds.

Also, looks like Jorost reclaims his crown. And he's looking sexy with it, too.

The one word I said yes to that wasn't a word was "goosie". Haven't they fucking heard of goosie night?
