I can't really choose anything in this because my parents won't let me get a dog, all I've owned are cats. :x

Dogs will cuddle on demand; the difference with cats is you actually want to cuddle them.

Sorry, I meant to say that dogs will slobber on you every time you touch them. :P

I think of dogs the way I think of kids: I like them but I don't want to live with them. Dogs are too needy, too demanding of your time. I don't like all the walking and I certainly don't like the picking up poop. Cats are more in keeping with my personality. I like the idea of keeping a cat, and I have been tempted to get one, but the thought of cat hair everywhere deters me. Plus since I live in an apartment it would have to be an indoor cat, and that means a litter box. I don't like housekeeping as it is, and do as little of it as humanly possible. Adding cat hair and poop to that mix? Doesn't end well.

I went with Dogs.
I love my cat, Scrapper (i named him because even as a kitten he took a swing at me. not a week old. Made me grin ear to ear. Gotta have balls to be that blind and small and be like "fool, i'm not to be messed with".) Scrap is well behaved, a good cat, heck a great cat. He gets along great with my kid, they play all the time. He mouses too, which in the country like I am, is a huge plus. He's easy maintenance too. Just clean the liter box once a week.
But my dog Boomer (from Boomer Sooner, Google it, if that makes no sense), has literally come to the protection of my wife and child from the over aggressive mutts next door and people that think it would be a good idea to cross the property line without consent. But this isn't the only reason. If all I cared about was an alarm system, I'd buy another rifle. But he's also the sweetest mutt on the planet. Follows orders to the letter. So not only is he a solider but a kind soul.
Yeah, I love both, and thus have both. But if I gotta put em in a contest, it's the Dog, no contest.

Jorost, get one of those bald cats. They're ugly, but still a cat and you don't have to deal with the hair.

A bald cat wouldn't satisfy my desire to have the cat sit in my lap while I stroke it like a supervillain. Believe me, I know. One of my friends had one of those hairless cats, and it was disgusting. Like a naked little old man, all loose skin. Ugh.

Since I've read cat and dog stories I think I'll tell mine. I've had all kinds of pets, 4 cats, a dog, birds (laid several eggs that hatched), lizards, frogs, fish, and snakes (they kept escaping in my house). Right now all I have left is a cat and a dog. The Cat's name is Blacki (cause he's black) and the Dog's name is squiggles. Squiggles is by far the cutest thing I have ever seen. He is a Jack Russel Terrier and he has an energy level to match that of my brothers and I. However, he is very naughty but we still love him. My cat on the other hand is not as play friendly. My cat loves to snuggle but on his own terms. He will jump on my lap when I'm playing xbox, purr, and then starting clawing at me lightly as his way of showing affection. Unfortunately it hurts and once he does it he doesn't like to stop. Also when he wants out he starts jumping on me head first and if that doesn't work he nips my leg. But he is a good cat and his timidness has saved him from the fates of my other 3 cats. Squiggles and Blacki both hate each other though. The day squiggles saw blacki all hell broke loose. My dog (still a puppy) shat himself and ran crying through the house. Ever since my dog tries to attack my cat on spot. Blacki could care less though. Overall, both my pets have their perks and flaws but I love them both. Squiggles is a little monster who always has an adorable face and Blacki is not to be trusted when he is on your lap.

Funny story-Squiggles has been kicked out of pet sitters homes because he really loves to mark his territory. Kind of reminds me of Marley from Marley and me but squiggles is a more manageable size.

Cats all the way. I've had both, cats are more intelligent, and more independant.

Currently I have two cats, Bonnie and Clyde. Bonnie is the archetypical supervillain cat. She is lazy until such time as she needs to do something. Like body slam a bird, or beat the crap out of Clyde cause he's being a jerk. I usually sit in my spinny chair with Bonnie on my lap. Mwahaha :3

Clyde on the other hand is extremely hyper. All the time. But he's not stupid, if he wants attention, he knows exactly how to get it. Taking things off the fridge, finding my keys, sitting on my keyboard, playing ninja on the window.... :P

But yeah, you can't really engage in a battle of wits with a dog. Cats on the other hand are quite clever. Lots of fun

There is a way you can teach them not to claw you when they're sitting in your lap; it's sort of hard to explain on the internet, but I'll try. You touch the bottom of their foot with a fingertip, you know the soft bit in the middle, and push it up away from your skin. It usually takes months but they figure it out, and learn to retract their claws when they're pawing at you out of love.

Unfortunately it's best to do with kittens. Older cats are really tough to teach.

Cleaning a cat's litter box once a day is much better than walking a dog around the neighborhood, uphil, both ways, in the snow, while picking up poop, 2-3x a day.
