DISCLAIMER: It is not my intent here to start a Mac vs. PC war here, so just simmer down. I get it, haters hate Macs.

But yeah, got a new MacBook Pro, finally replacing the old 2007 MacBook upon which just about everything you've ever read by me online was composed. (Well, okay, probably a decent chunk is from my work computer, too. But you get the idea.) That old MacBook has logged a lot of miles with me over the years. It's been all over the world, to Europe and Saudi Arabia and across the United States, from Los Angeles to Seattle, Floria to Maine. It's funny how we get attached to certain inanimate objects, isn't it? Almost as if they were pets. A lot of people get that way about cars, and I think it holds true for something like a computer. A trusty old companion who's been with you through good times and bad. Hell there have been times when it felt like my only friends were on that computer. I'll miss her. But she'll go to a good home. Once I make sure all the weird fetish porn is cleared off (itself a monumental task), it will go to my mother, who will use it to send emails and surf the internet, and probably little else. It will be a nice retirement for the old MacBook. She's earned it.

Now this new one, she's an impressive little beast. 750GB hard drive. I don't know if that's big by contemporary computing standards, but it feels frikking enormous to me (coincidentally, I've heard Nas utter those last six words on three separate occasions). The display looks amazingly sharper compared to the old one, and it is so much faster. Like virtually instantaneous. Again, I don't know how a 2.9 GHz Intel Core i7 and 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 memory stacks up against other modern systems, but I'll tell you what, it's a HELLUVA lot faster than the 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM in the old one. Ooh, I feel so smart typing all that jargon!

Also when Apple found out I'm a "teacher" (technically) I got a huge discount and a $100 gift card to the App Store. Finally being a below-average-wage public employee pays off!

Ooh Nyancat...

:nyancat:

not normally into Macs but I have checked out the new MacBook Pro and it looks nice.
If I didn't have $600 USD off my next PC purchase I would probably go for it

I'm not a huge mac fan mainly because for a PC with the same specs you would pay half as much (for the PC).

Yeah I used to have a 2.2ghz intel duo core laptop (3gb of ram, integrated graphics, 250gb or so HDD) is nothing compared to my new 2nd gen i7 3.4ghz, 16gb ddr3 ram, 1.25gb ddr5 (nvidia geforce gtx 560ti) graphics, SSD + 2tb HDD

The annoying part is I have to upgrade MS Office for Mac now. It took like two hours to download only to not launch because of some unspecified error. So now I'm waiting for it to download again to try it once more. Even here you task me, Microsoft.

YOU LIE!

I spent hours, no, days, working on a complex, macro driven spreadsheet. And what did open office do? Break it. Fucking retard program.

I got all my lecture notes with all it's mathematical notation in it. Put it in open office. Did it display right? No! All the mathematical notation snafued. Fucking. Retard. Program.

And I *would* get all ragey about you (yes you Jorost) calling a Mac good without installing a useful Operating System on it but... eh, I get it, some people like Mac. Wierdoes :P Anyway, the good news is that my computer is still the most boss computer out of the lot of you ;)

I hate OpenOffice. I find it slow and buggy. I would have preferred to just use Pages, but I was not confident that documents would have cross-compatibility with Word, which is what most of the world (including my place of employment) uses. I wasn't so much worried that Pages couldn't open Word documents, but more that Word on my work computer would be flummoxed by a Pages document.

heh

Pages saves RTFs doesn't it? RTFs are pretty much 100% everywhere now.

I have no idea how Pages saves things. But I am well acquainted with Windows-based systems being unable to do something they are supposedly capable of. So I wasn't taking any chances.

I will probably get Pages, though. For one thing, I have a $100 gift card to the App Store And for another, I'd like to be able to open my old Appleworks/Clarisworks files, and I think Pages can do that.

Pages is also much nicer than Word.

Just do a Save As and pick RTF or Rich Text File from the list.

Word used to be the best word processor out there, and now it's a clunky kludgy mess.

Hey

Word's much better than you lead on. It's pretty, easy to use, and does preeeety much everything.

Plus it's userbase puts any other word processor to shame.

And it crashes approximately eighteen times per minute. This is the problem I have with Word, just basic stability.

I haven't found Word to be particularly prone to crashing. OpenOffice, on the other hand, crashes all the time in my experience.

I haven't had Office crash in years. Open(Libre)Office crashed once or twice for me in several years, but not bad. I prefer Office overall, but I'm perfectly happy using Open(Libre)Office once I spent a little time learning where things were different.

Another reason to go with Office was for PowerPoint, which, despite what OpenOffice would have you believe, is not compatible with their knock-off. Just this past weekend I was unable to run an OpenOffice presentation on a computer that only had PowerPoint.

Yep, sigh. PowerPoint, as overused as it is, still has serious compatibility issues.

I still think that 90% of the stuff PowerPoint is used for... well the PP could have been left out completely and it would have made no difference at all. Still it's the in thing.
