I was debating between Somalia and Congo...then I was like hmmm at least Somalia looks nice...

right?:

then I saw this

reuters_somalia_arrest_23Mar12-878x572.j

and remembered that the ocean around somalia was full of stuff like this:

shark_finning-300x195.jpg

and that was just with a general google search of "somali beaches"

so dear god Somalia takes the list of worst place in my books.

Yeah, Somalia's pretty rough.  Not that Congo is likely much better.  Africa is a scary place.

Somalia is rough, as are the rest of the countries on this list.  But... in chaos is also opportunity!  A small, tight, well-armed group can live pretty well, even become kings in their own right.  The absolute power vacuum in much of Afica allows for piracy and bloodshed (duh), but as mentioned before, it also has mineral resources that can be exploited for massive wealth and power.  While there are warlords, they are fighting each other for control.  It would be rough, but not impossible, for a new one to emerge.  All it takes is dedication and violence of action to stake your claim.

Now... North Korea and Myanmar, however, have none of those positives.  Sure, you can live meagerly and in relative safety, if you do exactly as the overlords demand.  But, you can never be secure. And you can definitely never rise to any level of success without following the Fearless Leader and the Junta.  And even then, it is very difficult to break into their close circle.  Not to mention that natural resources are not as plentiful, and the standard of living is nearly as bad as many African countries.  So, I would say that it is pretty much a toss-up between North Korea and Myanmar as the worst place on Earth.  But I would give Myanmar a slight edge.

I thought I had read that Myanmar was loosening up slightly?

Someone hasn't been following recent news from Nairobi.

Slightly, yes.  I mostly gave them the slight edge over North Korea due to the climate and monsoon season.

Someone hasn't been following recent news from Nairobi.

Oh, I have.  But one incident does not change the total picture.  Just as the marathon bombing does not Boston anywhere near this list.  Kenya is rough, but it is also one of the more stable countries in sub-Saharan Africa.  Their problem is their proximity to both Sudan and Somalia.  And the near impossibility of securing a border such as theirs, especially with a large population of tribal nomads.

Umm, I was talking about Somalia. The Nairobi attack was launched from Somalia. It's not a land of opportunity, it's a deathtrap.

Well, that's a land of opportunity for the right kind of person.  It's just that the skill set required is not one that we find very attractive!

Agreed.  Whenever there is a power vacuum, there is always the chance to carve yourself a little piece of the pie.

And yes, I realize the attack was launched from Somalia.  al- Shabab is a ruthless group.  But again, they are not the rulers of the entire country.  They are but one of the actors.  While I wouldn't call Somalia a Utopia, that doesn't mean that a motivated group of people can't make a healthy living there.

If I were going to be dropped in a place and left to fend for myself, I feel like I'd have a marginally better chance in Somalia than in North Korea.  At least in Somalia you might find some missionaries or Western aid workers who could help you; in Korea you'd be entirely on your own, with a monolithic totalitarian dictatorship all around you.  Plus westerners probably stand out like a sore thumb in North Korea (not that they don't stand out in Somalia, but I bet they still see more foreigners there than they do north of the 38th parallel).

This sounds like an aphorism. There's no "there is always" in politics.

And yes, I realize the attack was launched from Somalia. al- Shabab is a ruthless group. But again, they are not the rulers of the entire country. They are but one of the actors. There are no rulers of the entire country. It's anarchy.

One of the basic rules of tribal warfare of the sort that is endemic in Somalia is that to have any chance at all, you have to have a tribe. That means, you have to be from there.

You'd be less likely to be executed for simply being white in North Korea. NK has all kinds of problems, but rampant racism on the scale of what you get in Somalia isn't there. If you could at least pretend ideological purity, you'd have a shot.

Tribal warlords aren't ideological. They execute you for looking different.

They might try to ransom me.  Unfortunately they'd be in for a BIG letdown!  No one's paying anything to get me back!

And North Koreans are some of the most racist, xenophobic people on Earth.  It's a big aspect of the Juche ideology.

I said "less likely" not "they're the model of tolerance."

Both places are pretty awful. The question is which one is actually the worst?
