Update: it was shot down.

That's not confirmed yet, but it's looking more and more to be the case.  It was a Boeing 777 with 295 people on board, Malaysia Airlines flight 17.  In fairness, Malaysia Airlines hasn't exactly had the best track record lately.

I don't know why you keep using the word "confirmed."  Confirmed by whom?  All the stories I'm reading are still very much up in the air (haha no joke intended).  Hint: Just because Fox News says something is confirmed does not make it so.

An advisor to the Ukrainian interior minister, Anton Gerashenko, says the plane was flying at an altitude of 10,000 metres (33,000 feet) when it was "hit by a missile fired from a Buk launcher", in a post on his Facebook page, according to the Associated Press.

Oh, I agree it was almost certainly shot down.  But saying something is "confirmed" when it is not is the error that news outlets like CNN make all the time.  So far the only ones saying it was shot down are the Ukrainians.  For now all that can be said is that the plane went down, and it looks very strongly like it was shot down by the Russians.

Another Malaysian Arlines flight has gone down. This time in UKraine near the Russian border. There is current fighting over that area and it is pretty clear that the plane was shot down. It appears highly likely from the Russian side of the border.

Pro-Russia separatists in Donetsk have denied bringing down the aircraft, according to Interfax. "The plane was shot down by the Ukrainian side. We simply have no air defence systems of this kind," separatist spokesman Sergey Kavtaradze told the agency.

According to Reuters, there are dozens of bodies scattered around the wreckage of the jet. The agency quotes an emergencies services rescue worker as saying at least 100 bodies had so far been found at the scene, and that debris from the wreckage was scattered across an area up to about 15 km (nine miles) in diameter.
