Also can I just say that every time I see "AI" I think it's the name Al (short for Albert)? Heh.

I don't think we need AI's.

We just need machines efficient enough to give us all the lifestyle we want without much involvement by us. We put in say, a month's worth of work, and then we have the rest of the year off. You have rotating members of the populace who work in the machines after putting in their fair share, perhaps even regulated by the government. Instead of needing to work 8 hours a day, 5 days a week etc. it's just for one month out of the year. Or two weeks or however the machines are efficient.

Who would pay your rent, bills, lifestyle and others on this part-time work?

The robots would.

Socialism actually works in this reality, as in the government can come in and control business and tell them to hire people and give them 11 months free off, and it would actually work. Because we'd have the technology to do so.

It won't work like that, because of the competition. To find the well-paid jobs, you will need to learn constantly, or else you'll be quickly disqualified and replaced. While the lower end jobs, where you don't need much qualification, will be simply externalized abroad. Globalization comes with pluses and minuses, you know...

Businesses also have to compete for the best labor. If a particular job market is paying 50,000 a year for just 1 months worth of work, who do you think everyone will go work for?

You obviously could potentially make 600,00 a year if you worked every day,but every day jobs, like say the police, lawyers, even scientists and engineers, things that need to be done more regularly, would probs pay more. It would just be higher up there, since we can afford more.

See, Jorost likes the idea of an AI that handles all the un-fun things in life. Like the cleaning. And the building stuff. And the moving things around. Means people are free to do philosophy and art and generally enjoy themselves. While I can admire the niceness of that, my background is in full tilt cynicism and perfecting order. I can't see any way in how a utopia can possibly come about, even though I can appreciate the beautiful futures so many people I like can see. I love my dystopiae. I love Brave New World above all else, cause I think it's basically the best approximation to what we live in. That's the dystopia we like. We love, and have happily let come about. This 1984 style observation is superficial at best, we are placated by media. Heck this website forms a small part of that control machine. We are watched, but the majority of people don't need to be. Most people's minds are already the property of the overarching system.

I imagine a utopia, or a perfect dystopia, as one where the control, the overmind, is directed to useful purposes. Not this profit without remorse thing, but things like fixing the problems in say... Africa. This would appear as a terrifying fascist regime annexing the world and imposing invasive control on it's citizens. Mostly cause it is. But results are results. Exitus Acta Probat.

Again, one of the things that confuses the hell out of people on these forums. Never do I ever suggest implementing such a dictatorial nightmare, but I can appreciate it as something that would get things done. I'd actually love something closer to (shockingly) Shokkou's perfect world. Where people like me aren't anywhere near power and have no capacity to get there. Where everyone honestly has freedom. I just don't believe it can happen :P

But yeah, there's an art to control and order. My AI would have to have a cult of followers. My AI would make people worship it. As an atheist, I would take Voltaire to heart; "If God did not exist, it would be necessary to invent him". He doesn't, so I would.

Mild star wars spoilers (seriously, go see it already) and low quality, but this speech does a good job of baaasically outlining what I'd be going for:
