For the usual reasons, you are about to be hurtled through time and space.  But, do to an artificially awkward premise, you get to choose where/when you end up.  The choices are...

•  Elizabethan England

•  Tokugawa Japan

•  Roman Empire

•  World War I

•  Ancient Egypt in the Time of Ramses the Great

•  China in the Ming Dynasty

Picked Ming China, because it's the only one I don't really know enough about to make an informed decision. I'm not big on Elizabethan England, and find Egypt and Rome equally despicable. World War I would be neat enough, but I'd see no reason to go back there unless it was specifically to do something about it, which at the very least I'd feel would be to travel before the war, not during. Likewise, I have no particular desire to travel to the Tokugawa era for its own charms. The Ming period feels like it would be interesting as well as informative, so yeah, that'll do.

i've got a gun you've got a time machine what the hell let's kill hitler

I'd either go to Rome or the first war. Others seem to foreign. I'd go Rome if I would have to lay low not to change the history and early 20th century if I can change history probably.

I choose WWI because it's the period I know the most about, and I might be least likely to die.

Also really interesting chances to change history. I also would like to know if there are any rules, if I go back with the clothes on my back, will I starve to death...

But still a cool idea.

I chose Tokugawa era Japan because i've always had a fascination with Feudal Japan.... hence me making an alliance theme based off of it... >.>

Not only that, but the culture clash/mis information/adjustment of norms (think bathing or creature comforts) will be way less than any of the other time periods. You'll be able to recognize things, and sort of relate, rather than being even more of a fish out of water (be tried for hersy for speaking english talking about computers in Ancient Rome).

Not to mention, if you want to give them "science" and share ideas, yea you can do it in other times, but I think WWI would be the most suspectiable to it. If I knew more about where I would be in society/the time period for any of the others, I might choose those but...

I chose the eras more or less at random, although I specifically did not choose WWII because I figured it would overshadow everything else.  I left the parameters fairly open, though, also on purpose.  You're going to end up in one of these historical periods, but after that all bets are off.  If you want to try to change history, go for it.

Then again, for selfish, realistic, and pratical reasons, I have to go with WWI. There really is little other choice. I speak English and english only.

If you were immersed in a new place you'd pick up the language pretty quickly.  Also they spoke English in Elizabethan England.  Apparently there was some playwright who was kind of well known at the time...

"little other choice". True they'd speak English, but it would be far from what I know. Hopefully I wouldn't be killed in my first few weeks with a hampered ability to communicate.

As well, while you could pick up the language quickly, to make first contact, beg someone for a place to stay, try and get a job, explore and ask questions, you'd need to be able to communicate. Surely it would come with time, but starting out it would be very difficult..

But I'm being too realistic for this to be fun. Again I am trying to be more realistic as an angle to attack this question, and selfish in the sense that, I want the highest quality of life for myself in any of these time periods, so that would directly colerate to my ability to better myself.

I would love to go to, almost any of those time periods, after a hellish start, just taking in the history would be its own adventure, not to mention you could easily chance history in numerous ways, and surely be creative enough to actually do well for yourself.

Actually I think I might want to change my answer.. But how do you choose if you're not being realistic? I could go with Rome because, who doesn't love Rome, but hell any of those time periods would be interesting. There would be a million things going on in any of them. A chance to die for. How could I not go to Tokugawa Japan? The fact that I know less about it would be even more of a challenge. Hopefully they wouldn't kill me for being a foreigner.

When are we going?

Elizabethan English wasn't all that different.  That's why we can still read Shakespeare.  The accent would probably sound weird to us (more like the Ozarks than a modern English accent), but otherwise we'd be okay.

Still hardly the range of choice I would like (again, if I'm being anal about the language issue), but agreed.
