That's right, bitches.  The classic matchup from Clerks 2.  What's your geek poison, Star Wars or Lord of the Rings?  Which is the most epic of the epic trilogies?

Oh I thought you were asking who would win in a straight punch up. Star wars easy.

But as to which is the most epic? I don't see speakable languages coming out of Star Wars.

LOTR all the way.

Used to watch the movies over and over when I was like 10 or so. I was hooked. Loved it so much. Still do.

I honestly think LOTR needs to go forward in time rather than backwards..but the last few movies bringing light to the book were great. I do wonder what happened to Gondor though..after Aragorn took the throne. What happened to the Easterlings and the Men of Rhun? The Dwarves? The Corsairs of Umbar even? I could go on. Haha

well

I can answer that PV! See, Middle Earth is supposed to be our world. Somehow. Dunno how. Anyway, the defeat of Sauron is the end of the Third Age. Our world is actually the 6th age. So a bunch of stuff happens, and then Gondor is Britain.

So is the rise of speakable languages the defining characteristic that makes something epic?  If so then perhaps Star Trek should have been included in the mix, since it has produced at least two!

I'm not sure any of that is canonical, PV.  Red, where is that information from?  Silmarillion?

Oh I know that, but that'd still be pretty boring.

I'd love to see a scenario where, Aragorn ends up being power hungry. He tries to take down Rohan and integrate them into his society. They fight back of course and there's war and things like that. There would need to be other elements but I'd say that's a decent base to it. lol

Ah yeah.  I know LoTR die-hards who don't consider that stuff canonical.  Which is not to say they think it's wrong, only that it represents unpublished source material, notes, etc., at least some of which the author may not have intended to be "official."  As any creator will tell you, not everything from notes or early drafts ends up in the final product.  Being that I have very little personal investment in LoTR (I liked it, but I'm not a die-hard fan) it's all academic to me.  All I know is that Christopher Tolkienn is widely considered to be an asshole.  As someone in much the same boat, I empathize.  :)

Well, I think that's kind of the problem.  Tolkienn himself (the elder) died before the concept of "continuity" as we know it.  I suppose a purist would restrict "canon" to only those materials written and published in J.R.R. Tolkienn's lifetime, and with his express knowledge and approval.  I'm not sure what that would limit it to.  I suppose that would rule out the Silmarillion, which might seem extreme to some.  Again, this is all secondhand to me — I'm not invested enough in LoTR to really care.  I read The Hobbit, but I can never get much past Tom Bombadil in Fellowship.  It's just... so... boring.  And then the movies came out, and I liked them, and I basically lost whatever little motivation I had left for reading the books.  That's the depth of my LoTRery.

And like I said, I have some sympathy for Christopher Tolkienn.  If my father had written a famous and successful fantasy series, and my life and success were entirely tied up in the world he created, I'd be a total cunt.

It took me forever to get past bombadil (literally, the first chunk of the book took me 6 months to read through. Nothing takes that long). However, it was interesting after that. I read Return of the King over an 8 hour period, it was that tense.

The Silmarillion was great imo, cause it was the bible with less crap. Just lots of wars, badguys, goodguys, days saved, epic battles, etc. Fun fun. :D

I also have the Unfinished Tales, which are important because the partial hobbit rewrite contained in it is heavily used by the new hobbit films. To the point that the introductory scene from the second film is line for line pulled from the Unfinished Tales. :P

Well, frankly I think the new Hobbit movies are way overwrought.  One two and a half hour movie is about as much as The Hobbit requires and can support.  THREE three-plus-hour epics is ridiculous.  It looks great, but it's boring as all get-out because there's just not enough story there.

B...but...

The rewrite was significantly longer ;_; the movies are based on all the extra story the rewrite adds.

Then it is a good example of how a lot of that material was not ready (or perhaps even intended) for publication.  That's the problem when you're dealing with dead authors.
