Which Beatle do you think was the most talented?  Not necessarily your favorite, mind you, the one you think was the best musician.  I would argue it's Harrison.  Lennon and McCartney were creative dynamos in their youth, it's true, but a lot of their material really slacked off in the '70s-80s.  McCartney has an impressive and undeniable body of hits, I'll grant you, but much of his later work id very derivative of his earlier stuff.  I dunno, I guess I'm just not a McCartney guy.  He is all about light pop, and while I love light pop (I am, after all, the world's foremost authority on ABBA), I feel that Harrison and Lennon were the more "serious" artists.  Of the two, I'd call Harrison the more gifted musician.  He took many of the steps Lennon took before Lennon got there, using the then-experimental Indian instruments like the sitar, for example.  He played a twelve-string guitar, for Chrissakes!  For me it's gotta be George Harrison.

And, yes I can say that. We don't have to pretend that Greece is the greatest country in the world because they invented democracy. Very important invention sure, they're still crap in comparison to some newer things. Yes those newer things depended on that discovery, no that does not give you a free pass to be better than them.

Interesting.  They all had several hits, many you would probably recognize if you heard them, but yes Paul Mccartney has been far and away the most commercially successful.  Still, is that the sole measure of talent?

I'm not voting because the closest thing I could pick to my feelings would be, 'I hate the Beatles,' but I don't feel that's accurate. I don't hate them, I just really couldn't bother with the vast majority of their music. I'm also not old enough to be able to have much of an informed opinion on their individual talents. Aside from that, pretty much what Red said.

(And before Jorost claims it's a false analogy again, let me say I don't consider any of the ancient Greek states to be among the greatest of their contemporaries, either.)

From a personal perspective, though, rather than a musical one... Paul McCartney's a right prick.

Everything I've read suggests that Paul McCartney is a jerk.  This was underscored to me early on, when I was about 14 or so and read an interview with him in which he said that if he had been killed instead of John Lennon he would be a legend, too.

 

Whenever we talk about the Beatles here I get a little bummed out.  At the risk of starting a flame war (not my intention), whenever someone doesn't like the Beatles I have the same reaction as when someone says they don't like Star Wars, which is to assume that it's an affectation adopted just to seem different.  Everybody loves the Beatles/Star Wars!
