I actually used to be the sort to stay up all night, but lately I find myself getting up early instead.

I like the nighttime. It's peaceful and quiet. And dark.

Not sure how to vote. I don't really sleep much at all. I'm lucky to get 4 hrs a day.

Night owl definitely.  I hate mornings.  Hate them.  There is very little I hate more than waking up to an alarm clock.

I would consider myself a night owl, but a morning person. I prefer to be up during the night, when it's quiet, dark, and no one is bothering me for anything, however, I consider myself to be a morning person in that when I wake up, I'm fully awake, up, and cheerful. Unlike my SO who takes about 30 minutes to achieve functionality.

Before I worked at the school my normal rhythm (assuming no work or other commitments) would be to stay up until 2 or 3 AM, and then sleep until anywhere from 10 AM to noon.  Noon always felt a little late to me, like I had wasted the day or something.  Now that I have to be up at 7 AM most days I find that I generally only sleep until 9 or so on my days off.  But it takes me a solid hour or more to get fully up to speed in the morning.  Maybe if I drank coffee it would speed things up, but I hate the taste of the stuff.

Heh.  Sorry, but you like what you like.  Or in this case, you don't like what you don't like.  Love the smell, hate the taste.  Same for gasoline.  :)

Heh. I normally cannot smell coffee, which I'm told is weird. Like, it seems as though it has absolutely no smell to me whatsoever. On some rare occasions, coffee made in a coffee maker (as opposed to my preferred methods of percolation or using a French press) does have an aroma I can smell, but it's certainly not a pleasurable one: something like a mix of skunk and cat urine. But yeah, most of the time, I can't sense any aroma at all.

What's crazy about that? Percolated coffee is by far the most delicious.

I'll Yom your Kippur right now.

Percolation is the systemic burning of coffee. It is literally the worst way of brewing coffee, short of dumping some beans in warm soapy dishwater and drinking that.

Now that's interesting that you cannot smell coffee.  Are you generally unable to small things?  Because coffee has a very strong aroma.  I would imagine not being able to smell it affects the way it tastes to you, since smell and taste are closely connected.

Well, I can certainly smell things. It's entirely possible that my sense of smell is not as acute as most people's, but as you and other flummoxed people say, coffee's aroma generally considered to be quite potent, so if it was merely that I had a weaker-than-average sense of smell, I'd imagine I'd have trouble smelling most other things as well. So I'm not entirely sure what the cause is.

Hmm.  I don't know much about how smells work, but if it's anything like taste, there are probably certain categories of aroma (like how with taste there is sweet, savory, salty, etc.).  So possibly you are unable to detect a certain type or range of aromas.  Are there other things you can't smell?

Hmm. I honestly dunno; none immediately come to mind, but it's entirely possible there are things I don't consider to have a smell that do, and I've just never thought to question, 'Why doesn't X have a smell?'

That's a good point.  How would you know if you couldn't smell something?  It's like when we nurses, doctors, etc., ask if you have any allergies — it's possible that you have all sorts of allergies that you don't know about.  For all I know I'm allergic to narwhals, but never having been close to a narwhal I'd never know.  Heh.

I'm pretty allergic to narwhals myself. I break out in a bad case of death when introduced forcefully to narwhal tusk.

This poll's results are clearly unfair. I think we need to eliminate the night owl option to give the other results a fighting chance.
