I pretty much gave up on the Oscars when they voted "Fightin' Round the World" ahead of Crouching Tiger.

I saw The Hobbit last year, it was pretty good. Otherwise I just watch Netflix pretty much.

To be fair, I want to see Lincoln, but as far as I know it's not on pay-per-view yet and I don't have Netflix, or a video rental store or a theater within 50 miles, so it'll have to wait. Argo and Zero Dark Thirty are possibly going to be good, too, though Argo's gotten a lot of bad press in Canada for not being, well, Canadian enough, and I'll probably end up seeing Les Misérables at some point just to see if they managed to make it any better than the terrible Liam Neeson version.

Life of Pi I'm not touching with a ten foot pole. The book was so excellent for, you know, the first 100 or so pages, and then the author decided to ruin a great story with plot. I can't imagine the movie could possibly do any better. Neither Django Unchained and Silver Linings Playbook looks like my type of film, and I've never even heard of Amour or Beasts of the Southern Wild.

However, all of this having been disclaimed, I still don't give a shit about the Oscars.

Crouching Tiger was godawful.  The whole time I was watching all I could think was, "This is just SO STUPID."

 

Not that Gladiator was anything special.  Traffic probably should have won that year.

Let me be clear: I would have been OK with Crouching Tiger losing.

 

I was not OK with Crouching Tiger losing to a large-budget B-movie. I mean, imagine if ID4 had won Best Picture.

I agree that Gladiator was not Best Picture material.  In my opinion neither of them should have been there.

Gladiator had one very good thing, which actually made the entire movie for me: the music. Hans Zimmer really delivered. I still listen to No We Are Free quite often. Good soundtracks quite often turn horrible films into watch-able films like Black Hawk Down or whatnot.  If I'm not mistaking, they both got an Oscar for that as well. 

 

 

Argo was a good movie to win Best Picture this year, although I've always had a soft spot for Les Miserables. Russel Crow kinda failed, but Hathaway really owned there. But I generally don't care for Oscars as much as I care for Palme d'Or in Cannes Film festival. A lot of "outsiders" can compete there and they do produce some good stuff.
