I was looking over the new trade center plans for New York and personally I don't care for it. I like Penn and Tellers idea...."Lest build the same fucking building and show those motherfucking terrorists that they didn't do shit and that the same building is back"

I think the two buildings should be in the shape of a giant cock and Osama bin Laden guy fellating it.

I support rebuilding it exactly as it was. I've been in there many times and it's a shame that it no longer exists.

Except for their height and duplication, there wasn't anything that special about them architecturally. You had so many historic buildings around it, with various ornate styles (terra cotta, art deco, etc.) and then from the top of those: two giant rods.

But yeah, as much as one gigantic building standing "1,776" feet tall would be uber-symbolic, convey a unique style style, and scream "we're back…" Penn & Teller (well, Penn really) have a good point.

I always liked the Twin Towers. I have a friend who disliked them because they lacked what he calls "human scale," in other words they only looked good from a distance, while up close they were soulless. I understand where he's coming from with that, but still I liked them.

I remember standing on top of one of the towers (the South Tower, I think), and being able to literally feel the building sway beneath me. I was told that they were designed to flex as much as a meter or more in strong wind.

On the other hand, I'm not sure they should be rebuilt exactly as they were. For one thing, there were some pretty serious design flaws that were tragically evident on 9/11. I have heard many structural engineers say that if the Empire State Building had been similarly struck, it would not have collapsed. I am not a fan of the Freedom Tower design, and the name strikes me as overly precious. I would prefer that twin towers in some form be built on that site. Sadly they didn't listen to me!

But whatever the final design, what the hell is taking them so long? It's been almost NINE years. That's two years more than it took to build the damn things in the first place! What's the hold up?

I spent most of my time there in the basement. My father worked for Port Authority and he had to do check-ins on all the subway terminals throughout the day, so I got to see quite a bit of NYC on days when I went to work with him.

Those giant escalators that took you from street level down to the subway in the WTC were awesome.

I say make it all mechanical. Using an elaborate series of gears, pullys, levers, and other mechanical mumbo jumbo to make the building change shape every day.

I haven't been there since this happened. I refuse to go there while it's just a hole in the ground. It's an absolute disgrace that they've done nothing with it yet.

I want to have the conversation with the terrorist guy in which I am asking where bin Laden is hiding and I say, "You prefer another target? A military target? Then name the province!"

I have to say, I really, really, really, really dislike the name "The Freedom Tower". I'd rather call it pretty much anything else. Hell, I'd rather see it called "The Brittany Spears Tower" and considering how much I dislike her, that's saying something.

Much like "freedom fries" were.

The buildings should be rebuilt to match the previous buildings.

I disagree that they should be rebuilt exactly as they were. For one thing, those buildings were dated and in many ways not ideal for their intended purpose. But more to the point, I think it's important to look forward, not backward.

That said, I am not a huge fan of the Freedom Tower design or name. It's all just a bit too self-consciously "patriotic." 1,776 feet tall? Yeah, I get it. Clever.

I like the idea of twin towers in some form going up on that spot. The design finalists can be seen here. My favorite is called the "New York Garden," and it's the one on the upper right, I believe. I like it because it retains the twin tower motif while at the same time capturing some of the feel of old New York, and restoring some people-friendly spaces to that area (as undeniably impressive as the old Twin Towers were, that plaza was a vast, open concrete wasteland).

But as far as I know the Freedom Tower design is locked in, so like or not I guess we'll have to learn to live with it.

Wait, are you serious? That's the height they are planning on building it to? Oh jeez, what a crock. The founding fathers are rolling over in their graves as it is with the state of this country, and now they're gonna stick a boot in their face by doing this?

Yeah, but One World Trade Center is just the address. One of the old towers (the north one I think) had that address. The other one was Two World Trade Center. The building itself will still be called the Freedom Tower, whether formally or informally. Either way it's dumb.
