I disagree that they should be rebuilt exactly as they were. For one thing, those buildings were dated and in many ways not ideal for their intended purpose. But more to the point, I think it's important to look forward, not backward.
That said, I am not a huge fan of the Freedom Tower design or name. It's all just a bit too self-consciously "patriotic." 1,776 feet tall? Yeah, I get it. Clever.
I like the idea of twin towers in some form going up on that spot. The
design finalists can be seen here. My favorite is called the "New York Garden," and it's the one on the upper right, I believe. I like it because it retains the twin tower motif while at the same time capturing some of the feel of old New York, and restoring some people-friendly spaces to that area (as undeniably impressive as the old Twin Towers were, that plaza was a vast, open concrete wasteland).
But as far as I know the Freedom Tower design is locked in, so like or not I guess we'll have to learn to live with it.
