Of the major types of psi phenomenon (i.e. telepathy, telekinesis, precognition, etc.), which would you most want to have and why?  Definitions:

 

Telepathy.  The ability to read minds.

 

Clairvoyance.  The ability to perceive objects or events taking place somewhere else.

 

Precognition.  The ability to see the future.

 

Retrocognition.  The ability to see the past.

 

Psychometry.  The ability to sense information about a person or place by touching an object.

 

Telekinesis.  The ability to move objects with your mind.

 

Pyrokinesis.  The ability to create fire with your mind.

Are they always active, or can they be "turned on or off" at will?

I give no elaboration other than the information above.  Use your imagination.

Hmmmm. This is difficult.

On the one hand, telepathy would probably be the most useful of the abilities.

On the other hand, there are just so many people I would like to set on fire.

Interestingly enough, after giving it some thought I've decided it doesn't matter. I'd choose telekinesis. The information gathering ones are tempting, but the information you get is still subject to your own interpretation. I can't sort out what's going on in my own head sometimes, I shudder to think of the misunderstandings that could happen if I ever assumed I could do it with someone else's via telepathy. Also if I had the power to see the future, the past, learn about a person or object by touching it, see things anywhere at will, or read minds... I would become a neurotic mess. Moreso than I already can be at times. That leaves telekinesis and pyrokinesis. Pyrokinesis would be fun, but I think telekinesis has broader practical applications.

Had to go Telekinesis as well.

I would've gone telepathy, but not only is Shokkou very convincing, but when you said we could use our imagination, I think I'd have an easier time being a super villain (hero?) by myself with telepathy than with telekinesis.

I was tossing up between precognition, retrocognition and psychometry, but psychometry won out. It'd be interesting to learn about people. I mean, I'm always curious as to the motivations behind what people do etc., so this would aid in my natural inherent curiosity.

The possible connotations of retrocognition and psychometry are interesting.  Imagine if you could touch an object and "see" that object's past, things that had happened in its presence.  It would be a history buff's dream.  Wanna know what life was like in ancient Egypt?  Just take a trip to the local museum and start touching stuff.

 

Telepathy is pretty awesome, especially if you can develop other aspects of it beyond just reading minds, like Professor X.  But even then it won't protect you from robots.  But telekinesis can be used against people and robots, which is why I ultimately chose it.
