So, there's this da Vinci robot surgery.

Would you get surgery done by this thing? I sure as hell wouldn't.

I'm watching the news and they're talking about how a hospital by me just got one. There's currently class action lawsuits in the works against this thing and yet they're still selling it?

How about when people hack it?? How about when it gets a virus? How about when the people who run it are complete morons? I'm sorry, but there's too many stupid people in this world to trust technology and too many bugs in technology to trust something as delicate as surgery.

DaVinci is run, like most robot remote controlled surgery machines, by a surgeon who is in the room with it. Or by a surgeon some distance away, with you in a room with it and a number of other surgeons.

As such, I'm fine with it. The class action is clearly being brought about by a bunch of fear-mongering, ill educated, luddites. These things allow for greater precision and reduce the damage done to your system in the process. A good development, in other words.

send that surgeon an email that says "you have a new fax" with a link to a virus in it and they'll open it... that's my point.

Can't do what you think it can. Machine will be cut off from basically everything, and being a robot is almost certainly using a custom OS.

Which, is to say, the only person who can hack it is the person who made it.

The robot is far less likely to make a mistake than a human.  I've been in operating rooms, and I've seen some whoppers.
