I have this déjà vu-type feeling that I've done this poll before, but I can't find it, so if I did, too fucking bad.

Over the past year or so, I've heard a lot of people Americans speak of doing things, 'on accident.' John closed his web browser on accident. Jane put salt in her coffee on accident. To me, this just sounds really, really weird, as the only way I'd ever heard the phrase said until very recently was, 'by accident.'

Clearly time for a poll, then.

I say neither. I say I accidentally did something. Both of the options you've given for the poll look and sound incorrect to me.

 

To use your examples:

 

John accidentally closed his web browser. Jane accidentally put salt in her coffee.

Yeah, that's my preferred terminology as well. The reason I didn't include it is that I feel it's separate from the options provided, since it fundamentally alters the syntax of the sentence.

"By accident" is the lesser of 2 evils. I would prefer "John closed his web browser because he's a fucking moron." Or "Jane put salt in her coffee because she's a dumb slut."

By accident is the more correct way of doing things.

I prefer the "Redezra accidentally took over the world" or "Redezra took over the world by accident" syntax, however I use on accident because that's the prevailing use in this area. Now that I'm aware of the discrepancy, I'll probably try and intentionally adjust my speech patterns to fix that.

The correct English usage is "by accident." "On accident" is American colloquial slang, and is not usually correct.
