Jesus Christ I wish I made that much on minimum wage. Just note I make half that, almost exactly. But I have to say that Australia has a bit of inflation which accounts for it.

Yeah...  I don't know where they're getting those US prices.  A dollar for a liter of milk?  Maybe in 1985.  I pay higher than the Australian prices for all of those things.

But let's pretend those numbers are correct.  Averaging them all together we come up with prices in Australia being 23.24% higher than in the United States.  The US minimum wage is $7.25, only 44% of the Aussies'.  In other words, they make 230% more money than us and pay 23% more for stuff.  And they don't have to pay for private health insurance.  That's still a pretty good deal.

A liter of milk being 1.35 is equal to 5.11 per gallon.

And most of australia's food is coming from America.

What if, America was that high?

WE wouldn't have a cheap place to import stuff from, except Mexico and China.

In essence, we could have double the minimum wage, and since there's no 15 times larger country with half their minimum wage to buy from, prices would go up, since we couldn't just import everything at cheaper prices.

Lol, Australia's food comes from Australia, China, Vietnam, Japan, Malaysia and Indonesia. Oh and New Zealand. But we treat them like you treat Canada.

Anyway, onto the point.

I'm so sorry Jorost! D: I didn't mean to make your hyper rich elites look bad by living in a semi-responsible country, with free, universal healthcare, free, world class educations, an unemployment system geared to putting people back into the workforce with free retraining and job seek assistance, and a minimum wage that actually can be lived on! D:

To be quite honest, that's the fault of the last couple of Treasurers we've had, who were really, really good economists with a patriotic streak. Especially Wayne Swan. That man was a genius.

Most North American food is eaten in North America. (Actually a huge percentage of it goes to feed cows.)

Wait, putting economists in charge of the economy?  Actual experts with degrees who know what they're talking about?  You know what that sounds like?

Socialism.

'Muricans don't like eggheads with fancy degrees, pampered elites who are probably homosexuals.  'Muricans like GUNS.

Seriously, though.  It's really quite sad that while culturally similar countries like Canada and Australia have managed to find pragmatic solutions to social problems, America is still fighting over fucking creationism.  Creationism.

I am more and more in favor of devolving authority to the states.  Massachusetts has its shit together, we've got this.  If Mississippi wants to teach creationism in its public schools and let its educational system slip back into the stone age, let them.  It's their own throats they're slitting, their own children they're shortchanging.  I have said it before and I will say it again:  New England would make a lovely European-style social democracy.  Our only problem would be banjo-picking carpetbaggers from the South trying to sneak in to take advantage of our social services.  But we can always build a wall.

I don't think Australia is socialist.

Of course that's going with a more accurate use of the term socialist, not the Republican Anti-Obama route.

I think most of those prices are pretty accurate, unless you're living in Alaska or Hawaii where pretty much everything is imported, thus everything is more expensive.

1 Gallon = 3.78541 Liters.

That means that one gallon of milk would be, on average, 3.78 a gallon. That sounds about right honestly. Actually, it's cheaper down here. Normal price for milk is around that price but almost every week somewhere as it on sale for 2.99 a gallon, so where are you getting that you haven't paid that since the 80's and that you pay way more? In Australia it would be $5+ for a gallon according to that.
