I read somewhere that there is a decent statistical chance that Hillary or Trump can died before they finish their first term.

The last one was Nixon in 1974.

Yeah, when impeached actually meant impeached.

You mean a vote in Congress that actually met impeachment standards of a 2/3s majority? That was cute though. I am not a fan of Obama but this Alt-Right bullshit about him being born in Kenya, being a Muslim and how he broke the Constitution are laughable at best. You are better and smarter than this Thrash.

The only time I as a laywoman might have thought Obama in violation of the Constitution was his authorization of the assassination of Anwar al-Awlaki—and funnily enough, I doubt many chanting about him being a dirty Mooslem furrner gave that a second thought. Like you, I find a lot to fault Obama for, but, also funnily enough, most of that involves his administration's murder of, you know, dirty Mooslem furrners, and the Constitution doesn't generally give them a second thought, either, even if I reckon the Hague ought to.

Nixon was never impeached. "Impeached" means brought before the Senate for trial; it does not mean removed from office. A president (or other executive or judicial officer, such a Supreme Court justice) can be impeached without being removed from office. There have been two impeachment proceedings against United States presidents: Andrew Johnson in 1868 and Bill Clinton in 1999. Neither were removed from office.

I do love the UK's impeachment laws. Forget public officials, anyone can be impeached by the Commons, and tried by the Lords, for any crime.

I'm not sure I like the idea of the aristocracy being able to haul anyone it wants before it and put them on trial.

Well, unless you're using that term broadly, they can't. The Lords lost the right of impeachment in the fourteenth century. They served as the judges, much as the Senate does stateside, but the Commons would still be the prosecution.

The real evil was in bills of attainder, by which Parliament could simply declare someone guilty, and impose punishment up to death and the complete forfeiture of property, by mere majority vote—no burden of proof required. There's a reason the US Constitution finds room to proscribe them in two separate places (Art. 1§9 and Art. 3§3).

Bills of attainder were really only for the aristocracy. My own family was attainted, which is why you all aren't addressing me as "Your Grace." Heh.

As for the rest, for much of English history the "Commons" wasn't so common. Most seats were held by wealthy landowners well into the 18th century.

True, but impeachment was also really only for the aristocracy—your Archbishop Lauds and Governor-General Hastingses. Parliament didn't really concern itself with common peasants back in the day, for the very reason that they didn't have franchise. :P That didn't—and theoretically doesn't, although no impeachment's occurred for the past two centuries—mean it's legally limited to the aristocracy, though.

True. Impeachment was (and is) generally reserved for office holders. So you could be attainted of your lands and hereditary titles, like Duke of Buckingham (my goddam birthright, but that's another story), but you would be impeached and removed from non-hereditary offices like chancellor of the exchequer.

Is batshit one word or two?

Also reading just a bit more about your nobility is more interesting than theories that our Madam President is dead.

As an adjective, surely it should be bat-shit?

Also reading just a bit more about your nobility is more interesting than theories that our Madam President is dead.

I'm a direct descendant of this guy. He was the great-grandson 3 times over of King Edward III, and twice the grandson of John of Gaunt, so he had much more Plantagenet blood and a better claim to the throne than most of his contemporaries during the Wars of the Roses. He was originally an ally of Richard III, but later turned against him, rose in rebellion, and was killed. He, and not Richard, was probably responsible for the infamous deaths of the Princes in the Tower.

His son, Edward Stafford, was a much stronger claimant to the throne than the usurper Henry Tudor (who was only a few generations removed from stablehands), but Tudor defeated Richard III at Bosworth and became King Henry VII. Edward Stafford was a baby at the time and had no way to press his claim. Later Henry VIII had Edward executed in order to remove a potential rival (he was also one of the wealthiest and most powerful nobles of his day, and Henry wanted those spoils).

If any of this had gone differently I would have grown up in a MUCH bigger house. :)

"Batshit" is one word.
