I agree. I was mainly putting in Asterix because of its difficulty as well as TMNT. Not really sure about the popularity of the former, as i said before and i dont think alot of people look to it for inspiration either. TMNT n the other hand was pretty popular when i was a kid...at least in my neck o the woods. And they both have sentimental value to me lol.

Nethack is interesting, because it was tremendously popular inside a small group in its day, but obviously the population of people playing videogames was way smaller then compared to the millions of people playing things like GTA III and WoW now. That's also why I didn't mention Ultima IV, which absolutely dominated the market back then but, well, much smaller numbers compared to something like Quake.

Space Invaders I think gets an argument though, as does Breakout. People still play those games on phones and such.

I already had the Quake discussion in this thread, Red, pay attention. (Long story short - they put Doom in; I would either have put Wolfenstein in because it was first or Quake in because of its huge impact on gaming.)

Zork is also interesting, because although Infocom is now long gone you can still see its influence on the logic of adventure gaming.

Asterix the comic belongs in the Comic Book Hall of Fame, good god how many millions of books have they sold; however I'm not buying putting the videogame there.

Sonic the Hedgehog and Monkey Island, although I may in fact despise both of them almost as much as I hate Street Fighter, are also extremely influential. Ugh. Can I stop talking about them now?

Unreal Tournament & CounterStrike were both progressive evolutionary games from Quake II. Which, you know, isn't a bad thing; that could be said about pretty much all of our modern shooters, but eh.

Dune 2? Huh?

Civilization... same problem as the Elder Scrolls games. It sold well, and had a dedicated fanbase: but - not influential outside that group, and what's more it's basically a type of game that has completely disappeared now, so not a long-lived game either.

That said, SMAC is still one of my ten favourite games ever.

Civ II is the birth of 4X turn based stuff

Dune 2 is the first RTS.

Dune 1 was turn based.

Yeah, it is based on Dune. There's a remake called Dune 2000 that you might be able to get working.

There's also a spiritual successor called Emperor: Battle for Dune.

Myth was not. It was released in 97. Dune 2 was released in 92

The original C&C was turn-based, I thought.

Looked up Dune 2. It's cited on Wikipedia as an early RTS, but not the first. Interestingly they seem to indicate among the first RTS games was Ancient Art of War, which I used to play and just called Art of War, as one of the first RTS games. I would not classify it as an RTS game either, due to its ... slowness. lol. It was kinda Civ-like actually.

However they also do not list Myth as an RTS at all, instead inventing a different subgenre called RTT because Myth has no resource collection and unit creation. Dumb.

I played #1, #2, #3, one #6, #16, and the first one of #20. Only the first three came out while I was actually a child though. None of them would precisely be described as incredibly influential on me, in particular #6 and #20 being things I despise.

Probably the videogames that were most important to me as a teenager were Ultima IV, Racing Destruction Set and Karateka.

Oh yeah!

See there we go, a bunch of games before Myth.

Still, Dune 2 was the first, and so should probably be preserved.

Hmmm...

I wonder. If you're going to place games in the Hall of Fame which are The First, then Wolfenstein, Wizardry (first computer RPG), EverQuest (the first graphical MMO), and probably a whole bunch of other games which I forget - and nearly everyone else does too - have to be in there.

It's a Hall of Fame. Games in it should actually be famous.

Again i stress eventually. The OP was concerned with the first class or the creme de le creme of video games. Wizardry and Wolfenstein are great games and should get their day in the sun but they do not and should not ever be brought up in the same conversation with Super Mario Bros, Pong or The Legend of Zelda.
