What do ya'll think? I am in the market for AV again and am not sure what to get. I can get my hands on Symantec Endpoint Protection and I believe McAfee Virus Scan Enterprise through the DoD, I also have a license of McAfee Total Protection at home that I could use, but I believe that license will run out in a few months. I installed McAfee VSE a few years ago and it blue screened on two brand new computers on install so I gave up on that. I then used SEP until I was tired of its intrusion detection notifications on my fucking homegroup. I have two computers I am needing to protect, IDGAF what my family uses at home. One laptop is my daily use, gaming, and school system, while the other laptop is yet to be bought and will be used overseas while working so SEP may actually be the better choice. What do you IT guys think around here?

Also I am trying out NordVPN and its pretty cool and cheap. I am buying 1 year for $36 and they have a kill switch to be used with programs and I will be looking at configuring either windows firewall or comodo firewall or w/e I get to act as a total kill switch. That way it can only connect to the VPN servers and also likely the domain name of NordVPN if I can do that.

Avast! Free is really good. I'd bet that the paid version is even better.

The best antivirus is a antivirus. People that say they have commonsense bullshit installed tend to be great targets for all kinds of fraud.

Antivirus is number 22 on the list of How To Secure Your Network

The "Top 4", which mitigate 85% of threats are:

Application Whitelisting: Don't install anything but that which your sysadmin tells you to. At home? Don't install anything but licensed products. No pirate stuff, no cool widgets from random websites, no toolbars, nothing.

Patch Applications: Keep your applications (java, word, chrome, firefox, steam, etc) up to date at all times.

Patch OS: as it sounds. Patch yo OS as soon and as often as possible.

Keep Admin Privs to those that need it: Don't just make your account an admin account and be done with it.  Use that UAT shit. Don't tell things you aren't sure of that they can have admin privs. Try not to have any programs running with control over your computer.

After that, you're pretty much sorted.

You know what a home users does? Not that. Fucking hell you might be lucky if a consumer reads a popup and not just smashes. Next to that you have people that think they are smart enough to see when they are infected and meanwhile wreck all the security settings Microsoft put in because their evil and they know it better.

Power drill 9000 with extra drill bits sure can be safer, but not if you stab yourself with a simple screwdriver every time you used it.

No you don't. I can do your job and develop software and maintain network security aaand any number of other cool computer things. Sure I shouldn't do all these things at once to maintain said security (or sanity but hey), but I can do it, cause I'm the ultimate computer person :3

tl;dr: Redezra's Computer Ego >>>>>>> All other possible egos

No you don't. You have to adhere to the rules before the forum gods strike you down.

And also the only viruses I am getting is those Drive By ones.

Best antivirus = no modem.

Still get viruses.  I remember I scan a Shovelware CD called "1000 Best Games" and it contain 2 viruses.
