I think you're being a bit overdramatic. American military power is important to western security, but it's not everything, and I don't see a President Trump suddenly turning around and allying with China to bring the world to its knees. A return to American isolationism wouldn't be a good thing but it also wouldn't be the end of the world.

Economic power? It's the fucking lynchpin of the western economy, that's why shit like the GFC could happen. The US needs to stay stable, above all things, so that the rest of us can sort shit out.

The US isn't stable. Saying that it needs to stay stable is making an incorrect assumption, it's a volatile quagmire.

I'm not in the US either, but I'm closer to it. Close enough to realize it is not now nor has it been in recent memory stable. Their politics are a progression of upheavals.

 

What other major western country could have had a government shutdown like during the Gingrich-Clinton battle?

That's a very glib and detached analysis, Haf. I'm not saying it's not correct, mind you. But it glosses over the fact that, while people may be resilient and eventually bounce back, there could be a lot of suffering and pain in the meantime.

"Admit" what? I'm not sure why everything has to be adversarial with you, Shokkou. I'm agreeing with a lot of what you say. But what's the point of arguing about things that haven't happened yet? I have laid out the situation as I see it many, many posts (YUGE posts! YUGE!). Now all we can do is watch it unfold. It will be entertaining, if nothing else.

You're worried that Trump is going to do something catastrophic despite him demonstrably not having the clout to do so by himself. Congress doesn't like him. A lot of them are establishment tools. They're not going to let him do whatever he wants and they're not going to give him legislation he wants. Same goes for the SCOTUS, yet you have this nagging concern that some looming danger will come to fruition when Trump takes office. It's laughable.

Presidents can do a lot of damage without Congress' intervention. I mean, just look at all of the terrible, evil things Obama has done (according to Republicans) or Bush did before him (according to Democrats).

But are any of those things catastrophic and irreversible? If they were, you wouldn't have so many people constantly harping on about repealing Obamacare or ending the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
