New Horizons closest flyby of the Plutonian system happens July 14th.

Haha. Yeah, it's cool, but let's be realistic here. It's not like these are big, glossy pictures ripe with new detail. It's just a couple of blurry, indistinct blobs. This was always my problem with space "exploration." I want to sit on the command deck of a starship and shoot lasers at aliens, not look at grainy images in a computer lab and do a bunch of math. Ugh. College astronomy was a HUGE disappointment!

 

On the other hand, naming the features is definitely cool. I'm voting for "Roger."

I think Europa is going to be where we see the next really cool pictures. The plan is to send a camera beneath the ice that covers the surface to the liquid water below. I'm hoping they'll get down there and send back one brief image of a giant alien sea creature swallowing the probe whole before it all goes dark. Now that's alien life!

Oh hey, NASA announced yesterday what they are putting on their probe that will be going to Europa.

Guess what isn't on it?

Yeah, ice drill and submersible camera.
