I have a confusing relationship with the Romulans in Trek. They're such a fascinating idea, but the execution is so often very poor.

  • Balance of Terror is an absolute classic;
  • We won't discuss the other TOS Romulan episode, because it was given the Third Season Treatment;
  • The Neutral Zone appears to set them up as TNG's new villains because the Ferengi are crappy villains and the Klingons are our friends now, and it does so in a terrific way;
  • Unification is one of TNG's best two parters;
  • Face of the Enemy is also pretty good;
  • The recurring role the Romulans play in the Klingon Soap Opera of Gowron, Duras and Worf is ... yawnable;
  • and then there's Nemesis. Oh god.

There's a good Romulan-themed graphic novel by John Byrne called, appropriately enough, Star Trek: Romulans.  I always liked them, until the Remans came along.  And I don't really like Nero or what they did with them in NuTrek.

DS9 far and away. Broke away from traditional Trek mythology and as others have said was by far the best SciFi series of all of them. DS9 also built apon the TOS's legacy of dealing with issues of the day, which TNG never did despite having the best actor in any of the series in Stewart. Avery Johnson is also a fantastic and underrated actor who has been phenominal in everything he has done.

DS9 was okay but they made a huge mistake by not having a starship from the very beginning.  When they finally added one, the Defiant, it seemed more like an afterthought.  The show got better once Michael Dorn came aboard and they started having larger, multi-season story arcs.  But the whole "Prophets" thing was stupid.

On the other hand, I liked the Founders.  If I could be any Star Trek race that's probably the one I'd pick.  Ooh, sounds like a good poll idea...

The idea of not having a ship the first few seasons was irrelevat because they were building the character base, focusing on the station, and Bajor. The Defiant was really only needed once they introduced the Dominion. Being on the verge of an invasion at any time in all. I will say that Dorn did add quite a bit to the series. Moreso than he did in TNG in my opinion.

Right.  But before the Dominion and the Defiant the show was boring.  They should have dumped all the "Emissary" nonsense in the first writers' meeting and started right off with a ship and a new, overarching threat.

Heh, once again I am unsurprised by Jor being typically secular. B-)

DS9 was on a space station because at the time the second most popular SF show was Babylon 5, and they were trying to compete with it. B5 is also why DS9 had strong religious themes running through it.

I like the Cardassian stuff better than the Dominion stuff actually. I really love the last two seasons of DS9, by which time the Dominion has been defeated and we're back to Bajor and the Cardies.

However the Cardies are probably my favourite Trek villains period. I blame David Warner for this.

The Jem Hadar were pretty cool though. But the Founders were sorta dumb.

I am going to say this one time and one time only, so I hope I make myself clear:  The best Star Trek movie is Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.  I think you will all agree that I am a kind and benevolent master, but make no mistake — I am master, and there are certain heresies I will not tolerate.  Know you this, heretics and haters of Khan, I will cast you down into the deepest pits of hell.  To the last I grapple with thee, for hate's sake I spit my last breath at thee.

I dislike Trek II because of the plot holes. The performances are terrific but the basic story idea is idiocy.

Story Idea is awful? A weapon that could destroy an entire world getting into the hands of a terrorist is idiotic?

Haf doesn't like the whole "Kirk-left-me-on-this-planet-fifteen-years-ago-and-everyone-forgot-about-me" element of Khan's story.  Which I suppose is a valid point if you really think about it.  I mean, the Federation placed the planet Talos IV under quarantine with the threat of death just to keep everyone away from the big-headed aliens from "The Menagerie," and all they could do was cast illusions.  Yet they completely ignored the dangerous, genetically engineered superhuman warlord in their midst?

My solution to this discrepancy is to not think about it.  :)

That's the main part. I also dislike the "Kirk wildly risks the Enterprise because he's not super-overprotective of her or anything. No, not at all" part of the plot.

He wildly risks the ship all the time.  It's kind of his MO.
