Also Alyster, the Vatican doesn't count. Any 'country' that has no citizenship and no births (unless by accident) is not really a country.

Vatican City is still recognized as an independent nation-state, so I'd say it counts.  I mean, it's basically just a way of counting one visit to a foreign country (Italy) as two, but still.  Take a drive up to San Marino and you could count three!

 

If any place doesn't count it's Canada.

Actually that would make for an interesting question; suppose someone visited the Soviet Union, Russia, the Ukraine, and Kazakhstan?

 

Would that be one country, three, or four?

I would say that you visited whatever country the part of the Soviet Union you visited now occupies.  So if you had been to Moscow or St. Petersburg, you would now say you've been to Russia, but if you went to Odessa you would say you'd been to Ukraine.  In both cases you would probably also mention that when you visited these places it was still the USSR.  So in Haf's example, I would say that you had visited three countries, but that they were lumped together as one country at the time.

It's an interesting question if they were one country. Ukrainian SSR and Belarussian SSR were part of UN separately of USSR.

I asked it because my birth certificate is issued by the Soviet Union, which would have given me the right for Russian citizenship.

It's so creepy to think I was in Soviet Union.

Well, you misunderstood my example. I meant what if you'd been to all these places both before and after the fall of the Soviet Union. B)
