Canadian football is American football with some very minor variations. I live here too B)

Soccer is actually an old English term for it. It's short for association football. For some reason North Americans still use the word that's based on association while the rest of the world says football.

I'm by no means an expert on either sport, but it seems to me that the differences are a bit more significant than they may appear.

I think it's ironic that someone says they like an American sport because it's less fake. B) But I digress.

I'm in favour of serious crackdowns on floppers in all sports. I think the NBA is moving in the right direction with the fines for flopping, although I wish they'd fine refs when they show obvious bias, but fines for flopping is at least a start.

One of the reasons I like English Premier better than most soccer is because of the officiating. Generally the refs there seem to be less easily suckered. I'm really getting sick of FIFA and will probably skip the next World Cup. It's depressing, because the World Cup does feature the world's absolute best, but it's kinda pointless to watch the matches when they're rigged.

If I want scripted television I'll just watch Elementary or something. B)

There are a lot of very minor variations. Essentially both sports are just armoured rugby. If it wasn't for Americans being clueless about what rugby really is, then we could probably subsume both sports as being just variants of rugby. You go through that list and you'll find that a lot of the rules changes are about things like timing; one sport uses 40 seconds, another 25, another 20. Stuff like that.

For what it's worth, my undergraduate education was at St. Mary's University, one of the leading Canadian football universities. Most of the American football I've seen has been in the form of Huskies games, as they are one of the top Canadian college football teams. There are differences between it and the NFL, but really, it's not that different; the difference between grasscourt tennis and claycourt tennis is probably greater, and nobody would consider those to be different sports.
