Thanks   :)

Processor should definitely be Intel, and depending on your budget an i5 is probably best. i3 if you're going cheap, i7 if you want to future-proof, but the i5 is a good all-around chip. Manufacturer is mostly preference, but I'd avoid Sony and Toshiba just from some personal experiences. HP laptops have usually done me well (though the build quality on the "metal" parts of my dv7 is a bit to be desired).

I have a hp i7 from 3 years ago. It still works great on games, although it gets kinda hot.

i agree with locke, although, theres not really point buying the low tier i7s, should rather buy a better i5 (not sure about the prices).

As for manufactureres, I don't like HP because they install all kinds of shit on your computer, so I had to pretty much wipe it because I don't want it clogged to begin with. (I got a good deal, found some coupon thingy which is why i bought a HP).

I've heard dell does the same.

Tbf, I really like Acer and Asus they are usually cheaper, and seem to work better.

edit: Depending on what kind of games you want and how much you want to play outside your residence, you should just build your own computer (not laptop). And just have a cheap/old laptop that you use for other purposes.

Desktop is just so much better for playing games lol.

Had a HP, it burned my hand right before it burned itself.

I used to cool it in a freezer.

It took me 4h and 50ish screws to open it and clean it.

Never again.

I've had a Dell for 4 or 5 years now, does me well. No build quality issues, no overheating problems. It's not a daily driver though, it's only for while I'm at school.

if you get windows 8, look for a sale for free a touch screen upgrade. It may seem frivolous, but it works well with win8.

Look for the sale that meets the specs you want. That is my advice.

I've been using dell laptops for the last 5-6 years exclusively, i've had no serious problems with them.

Also, you're a total queer for wanting to use Windows. At the least, don't be such a whiny little girl and dual boot or something.

Also, there is nothing what-so-ever wrong with AMD processors, by the sounds of it, AMD might be making the chips for both the ps4 and the new xbox.

You use the OS that suits your needs. Your average person doesn't really have a need to be using Linux, whereas there are things that Windows provides (mainly program availability and compatibility) that they require. Chances are that he doesn't need the benefits Linux provides over Windows.

Because they make good APU's; they can't beat the i* line for CPU's though. As far as "nothing wrong," I know that Bulldozer FX chips have had massive issues with gaming in the past (for instance they couldn't play games with Steam's DRM), but I don't know if they've gotten around to fixing that yet or not.

I've had my Toshiba laptop for 3.5 years. Its been fantastic. I never encountered any real trouble until the three year mark when the 12-cell battery lost its charge, which can be replaced for $50-$100 depending on how big of a battery you want. I personally look for Intel processors but can't say I've had a bad AMD one. I would avoid HPs, at least their desktops. Some of their newer laptops look/seem better though.

Looks like Intel is in the lead for processors and HP for laptop brands. Thanks for all of your input.

I have a Acer running Ubuntu now that I use most of the time but it's almost 6yrs old and gets bogged down a bunch with just skype, chromium and irc running at the same time. I need more power.  :)

Im probably going to buy one online because Staples is the only store close to me and Im not going to travel to a city for a damn laptop. lol   Here I come newegg and tigerdirect  ;)

I find that most people regret not changing to linux sooner once they get used to it. It's not like Linux-based operating systems serve a specific purpose, outside of games, they can do anything that windows does (and the gaming situation is getting ALOT better, day by day), they are simply better in every conceivable way. It's like saying "tell you what, you can have a bicycle, for free, would you like a 1 speed or a 18 speed?" Well... Why not.

As for the processors, I never really kept up on any of that crap, but the way you explain it, sounds like it might have just been Steam's fault. AMD CPU's are solid chips with great power and represent great value, but I don't do much gaming. I don't think it's much of a secret, however, that Intel's multi-core technology resembles a pile of dogshit when compared to AMDs, or at least it used to.

Also Rotty, ew, Gateway. Otherwise, great value. Way too fucking big (17 inches is gyfuckingnormous), could have done with a little more ram, and if I read it right, the disk drive is read only. It'll work for watching porn, though.

AMDs current selling point is value. They can make an ok chip, but they have more issues and overall lower performance. But, to the average end-user performance isn't an issue, the bottleneck will be somewhere else. For gaming, it's almost always GPU, for system responsiveness it's HDDs.

Now, when multi-core systems first started becoming popular, I'll admit, Intel's offerings were less than awesome. You basically had two P4's slapped together that performed alright and ran like a burner on a range. But since the introduction of the Core 2, they've pretty much been wiping the floor with AMD for all intents and purposes. They recently (last year) released a new 8-core processor that managed to just barely come behind an older 4-physical, 4-virtual core Intel chip. AMD simply cannot keep up with Intel in the performance x86/x64 market. I'm too lazy to find the articles, but I'm about 95% certain that AMD stated at one point in the last 3 years that they're basically giving up on the desktop processor market and are focusing on their GPUs (ATI) and low power/low cost markets. They have been doing some cool things with low power ARM architectures for server utilization, but again, that's a different market.

tl;dr: If you're building a system and are considering performance, go Intel. If computers aren't your priority and you're just trying to squeak by with something that works for as cheap as possible, go AMD.

Many things change, many things stay the same.

The thing that sticks out to me is alot of these high-performance CPUs is well, you and I, we can't fucking afford them. You go and look at the benchmark ratings, and if you want a processor that ranks in the top 15 overall, you're going to have to dish out more then a thousand dollars just on the processor.

For what you and I could actually afford, AMD has technology that is good enough that in that price range, they are actually going to give you more. It's not as if they are making trash, but there is a certain setback to not having as large of an R&D budget. That Intel has good stuff at the top of the rankings means nothing because at the level that you or I am buying, AMD has offerings as good or better for less money.

That said, by and large, that large R&D budget really is looking at a different type of consumer then me.

Gateway was purchased by Acer a while back, and I have a couple older Acer products that are still working so I have no problems with their stuff.   ;) I purchased the extended warranty so Im good for a while just in case. :P  The disk drive is RW so it's all good. I have plans to buy another 4gb soon. I love the 17 inch screen, it's a little bit heavier, but I can handle it.   :D
