Well, in fairness the ancient Egyptians worshipped dogs, too. Today we call them Pharaoh Hounds.

But let's face it, ancient peoples worshipped just about everything. Hey, look, a funny looking rock! Let's worship it!

DID NOT WORSHIP DOGS

Stupid dogs, always derping about n slobbering on crap. The worst my cats have ever done is sat on my keyboard when trying to get me to give them bikkies :3

I like things and people that can actually do well in a battle of wits with me. Whereas many humans come half prepared, all dogs have no idea what the hell a wit is, or where to get one.

Also, Dogs are stupid. And messy, and poopy, and loud, and smelly, and not cute, and annoying, and demanding, and really, really, really stupid.

Any questions?

I've had a lot of wonderful dogs, including Uschi, the dog I grew up with. One of my earliest memories is going to get her as a puppy.

Posted Image

God I loved that dog. She would wait outside the school and walk home with me. And she was a tough old girl. One day she came home with a deer leg in her mouth.

But despite fond memories, I don't want a dog now. Maybe someday, if I had a house. But not in an apartment, and not when I'm home as little as I am. Dogs are just a bit too needy for me -- I like that I can come and go without a lot of commitments. But I like other people's dogs. :)

I have had both, but I would take a dog hands down. Cats are smart, but some dogs are too such as border collies - usually considered the most intelligent breed. Ultimately, it depends what you want out of a pet. There are different types of dogs and cats that have completely different personalities - pick whatever makes you happy... just not a lap dog.

Since when did intelligence become the most important factor in a pet? I've had many little critters I loved a lot, but that were dumb as, well, hamsters and bunnies.

I'd like to see your cats defend you in the event of a break-in. Most of the time, cats defend themselves, whereas dogs defend their territory and their masters. My mom's little dog here would kill to protect her momma. My mom and dad sometimes playfight and her little dog will jump in braking, growling, and biting at my dad trying to protect my mom. Her cat has never done that before.

You know why there aren't as many dog rescue stories? cause it happens too often to be on the news.

Dogs are great for home protection. The likelihood of them ever actually fending off a break in is miniscule, but just having company can be reassuring if you live alone. And their presence deters any would-be wrongdoers, even something so petty as neighborhood kids trespassing. Just make sure the dog doesn't BITE those neighborhood kids, or it could be your house.

When my family was moving out of our last house, we had already moved out before we closed on the house, some neighborhood kids decided they wanted to go jump the fence and take a dip in our pool. Our neighbors warned us about that and we called the police. They told us if a kid was to drown in our pool, regardless if they broke in, we would be liable. He told us what we could do is return the dogs to the house, we had two fully grown German Shepards. He told us if the dog bites them, we are liable, UNLESS we put us "beware of the dog" signs. So that's exactly what we did.

The next day, neighbors reported the same kids come back with swim suites and towels, saw the signs and hesitated, climbed up on the fence to look over and the dogs started raising Cain. The kids all ran.

Sign or no sign, if your dog bites a kid it's going to be a world of problems. I've seen it happen. A friend lost his condo in such a situation.

Just saying what the cop told us. But that's just what sucks about our legal system. I better not say too much cause I'll piss somebody off. But I've seen some pretty stupid shit. Like a man breaking into someone's house while they are on vacation, getting trapped in there, and then suing the owners for entrapment once they got back, and he won! Pretty shitty stuff.

edit: Then again, I was probably 12 at the time so I might not be remembering every detail accurately. But I'd bet a pretty penny that the penalty for a dog bite is probably not as severe as the penalty for a kid drowning to death in your pool.

going back and thinking on this more, it's probably because people see a dog and go, "oh shit, lets get out of here." People see a cat and go "whatever!" until one jumps on their head from behind and rips them up.

Yeah, I'd need to see proof on that. We've all heard those kinds of stories, but they have the ring of urban legend about them. I once asked a friend who is a district attorney, and he assured me that, in Massachusetts anyway, you cannot sue a homeowner over injuries incurred in the act of committing a crime. But the bottom line is: if something happens on your property, you could be liable. And if the person was not there maliciously, like neighborhood kids cutting through, then almost certainly so.
