I couldn't help but notice that my name has been changed to the unpronounceable logo. Heh.

 

For anyone who doesn't know, I didn't really listen to much Prince before he died, but I had a couple of songs on my playlist, like "When Doves Cry" and "Little Red Corvette." After his death I started listening more, and realizing that I really, really dig Prince's music. I don't know how I managed to miss his entire career, especially given that the years when he was biggest were highly formative ones for me. But somehow I managed it. So now I have listened to nothing but the Purple One since April. I have over 300 songs, and I haven't even reached the halfway point yet. The dude was prolific, that's for sure. So yeah, maybe a little bit obsessed.

 

But obsession is okay when it's funky.

I'm honestly not a fan of Prince, but much like the Beatles, I can get how big of a deal he has been in music, and how much of a massive effect he's had on what music we listen to.

I have found that most people who say they don't like Prince's music have only heard a tiny portion of it (I myself was in this boat for a long time). He crossed a lot of genres and styles.

Actually my dislike is simple. I don't like his voice.

That's funny, because he had a remarkable voice with a very wide range. It's one of the things often mentioned when talking about his musical talents. That and his mad guitar skills.

 

What kind of music do you like, Red? Give me an example of a favorite song or artist. I want to see if I can find something by Prince in a similar style. (Not that I'm trying to change your mind, more for my own curiosity.)

Right well, the best anyone has managed to get is "Eclectic"

 

I like classical stuff, experimental electronica, various snippets of metal ranging from slipknot to sunn, dark ambient is a big stand out, I love that stuff...

 

In terms of the more "sane" bits and bobs, my favourite singer is Toni Halliday. Her band, Curve, is one of my favourite bands. However, the best usage of her voice I know of actually happens in a song by Leftfield she features in. As follows:

It sounds a little like ambient dance music. The singer has a good voice, high pitched and with just a little bit of nasality, which I dig.
