I've always liked the Wittelsbach variant of the Bavarian flag (below)
 

 

Every time I see a can of Red Bull I think of that flag, and then get really confused when I remember Red Bull is based in Austria:

Huh...Were they part of Austria at some point?

Not to the best of my knowledge, and Shepherd's Historical Atlas seems to consistently list them in federation with the other German states, through the Holy Roman Empire, and later the Confederation of the Rhine and the German Confederation. All of which did at some point also contain Austria, but alongaside Bavaria, not with Bavaria as part of it.

Great, now I can't help but think of Bavarian Cream Filled Red Bull.

Though not part of Austria (except for few temporary occupations) they're still quite similar. Bavaria is much more .... not Prussian like "war nut" part of Germany. When I was eating out in one Bavarian restaurant with friends a while back we couldn't help but to wonder what would the history played out like if Austria had unified the German states in 19th century instead of Prussia. The Grossdeutsche Lösung.
