As I understood it, the kid attacked first.
There's really no evidence of that. Even if he did, he didn't attack in a manner that warranted the use of lethal force. If you're a neighborhood watch guy who's going to pursue a suspect, you should at the very least carry pepper spray or a tazer gun, have a baton, wear body armor, know karate, have some means of non-lethal self defense, instead of just attacking a kid with a gun.
If a guy was stalking me, following me all day, and then jumped out and demanded I did something, possibly had a gun, and I knocked him over and tried to run away, that would still be the stalker for initiating the contact and everything. It is ridiculous to use lethal force to a situation that does not permit or necessitate it.
Furthermore, it is ridiculous to actively take part in a role where you expect to be following and then engaging suspects up close (after which you should clearly determine if they currently possess a firearm in their hand), who might attack you, and not have an alternative means of defense; if you're going to carry a gun in that circumstance, you better carry means of defense up to a gun.
