Thoughts?

If they want to protest. Protest peacefully not destroying/looting property it not going to help but hurt their cause.

The sad thing they protest at a teen(18 years old) death but their little to no outrage about the killings happening at Chicago or elsewhere.

It doesn't have so much to do with a teen being murder as it does of a unarmed minority teen being murdered by white cops.

An unarmed black teen got shot and killed by cops, so people are stealing sneakers and televisions because that makes it all better.

They can forget about their outrage due to watching the brand new TV and wearing new clothing... Because if they didn't do that they would need costly therapy due to what has happened...

Or some other bullshit.

Rioting has to do with long-simmering resentments and anger.  I don't know much about this particular case (to be honest I had to look it up, having not noticed it on the Google News feed), but it's not hard to see the large strokes.  Frankly, the way things are in the US right now, I think riots could potentially break out in a lot of places given the right spark.

also, they've enacted a no-fly zone over the area (i.e. keep the media out).

Now THAT'S kind of troubling.  What don't they want people seeing?

Exactly.  Frankly, that development (the closing of airspace to prevent anyone seeing what they're doing) is chilling.  Democracy needs light to thrive; only fungus grows in darkness.

They almost done it to Texas before.

Not exactly the case at Ferguson.

The St. Louis County Police Department told TIME it asked the FAA for the flight restriction after a police helicopter was fired upon “multiple times” during civil unrest Sunday. Ferguson, located just outside St. Louis, Missouri, erupted in street violence amid demonstrations sparked by the death of Michael Brown, a black teenager who was shot and killed by police on Saturday.

http://time.com/3105...aa-no-fly-zone/

Look like it just restricted to under 3000 feet (only First responders are allowed to under 3K feet).

That's a little less Orwellian, for sure.

Has anyone ever shot down a helicopter with a handgun?  You see it on TV and in movies, but it seems like a hell of a long shot!

I heard about this from a fellow GPAer who lives nearby and apparently there was a lot of looting going on in stores. It's pretty crazy, but I can imagine the anger over a police shooting like that.

Its not anger its opportunism and mob mentality, encuraged by the lack of police control. It happened in the UK and now its happening in the US.

It's conceivable. However the reason the minigun was invented was to shoot down helicopters. The thing is, shooting down a helicopter is in one sense easy, because the rotor is weak and if it's shot, even by a small bullet, the helicopter is done for. So you don't need a cannon.

However the rotor spins rather quickly. So it's pretty much impossible to aim at. So you don't have a lot of odds of hitting it with just one bullet. Enter the minigun, which is called "mini" because it fires rifle-sized ammo, but fires it at an incredibly fast rate so the odds are that one of the torrent of bullets coming out of the thing will hit the rotor.

Still if you did hit the rotor with that one bullet, the helicopter's toast.

You have a much better chance of aiming at the helicopter pilot, though, which is probably what the guy on the ground was doing.

Well, they're frequently used on helicopters, so another reason is that they are easy to use to shoot fast moving objects or when you are moving fast and they appear to be moving fast relative to you.

It's been here for quite a while. You'd be shocked to hear the things that happened during Katrina that were not televised.
