11,000 deaths a year is statistically insignificant when you're talking about a population of 300 million (0.0037%, to be exact). But that's cold comfort if you've lost a loved one.

Prohibition is one of the strangest chapters in American history. When you consider how difficult it is to get a constitutional amendment passed, it's amazing that one banning something as popular as alcohol ever got through. But then Americans have always had a healthy puritanical streak.

Anti saloon league and the WCTU managed to build their campaign from local to state then to an amendment. Maine laws spread to many states.

Drunk driving does kill people, but it's actually fewer than just the number of firearm suicides in the U.S. each year.

The point about heart disease in particular, is that a lot of heart disease is essentially preventable because it's caused by people being overweight. And if you could manage a 5% drop in deaths from heart disease in the U.S., then you'd be saving just as many lives as if you saved all of the people who died by guns.

Cancer is also linked to being overweight, but the statistics there are a lot more confusing and skinny people get cancer too, just not quite as frequently.

Cancer is actually linked to everything, because the actual correlation is "If you are still alive, you are gradually getting more at risk of developing cancer"

There is a school of thought which says that cancer is a natural by-product of evolution. But I think it's because people don't listen to enough ABBA.
