Sometimes I still miss codeine.

In the summer of '99, I had my wisdom teeth out in two separate operations. The dentist noticed that the wisdom teeth on one side needed to be removed (I forget why now, it was some common reason) and I went in for surgery. Then a week later or so I still had a toothache and they went hey we need the other side out too.

Wow that hurt.

Anyway after the second time they gave me a prescription for Tylenol 3s and told me to take them as needed for pain, up to I think four or six a day or something like that.

Tylenol 3s are the ones with codeine.

Well I didn't take six a day, lol. The first time I took one it felt like ... having an orgasm. For about a day or two. Really, really good.

I was extremely cheerful.

Of course this all happened a few days before I started my third year of law school, so in my first week or so I was legally stoned out of my gourd.

I think I took about three pills out of the bottle. And then I stopped because I didn't want to become a drug addict and the pain from my teeth was gone. But I kept the bottle for about two months because I couldn't get the craving out of my head.

Then I got rid of the bottle.

Still it was pretty much the nicest physical sensation I've ever had.

I did a little research later on, apparently for a small number of people this is what the codeine experience is like. The only other person I've ever met who had the same experience was also a man, I don't know if this happens to women or not.

Codeine is prescription only in the United States, Red. Which is stupid -- even in Saudi Arabia, one of the strictest countries in the world when it comes to drugs (you can get the death penalty for marijuana possession), codeine is available over the counter. But many of our drug laws date from the early 1900s, a pretty rigid and intolerant period in this country. Basically they came out of the same mindset that produced Prohibition.

Codeine is prescription only in states like Canada and the US which require a prescription for all opiates. Codeine is an opiate.

I will have to remember that about Saudi Arabia. If I'm ever stuck there and I decide I want to kill myself because I'm, well, in Saudi Arabia, I can always just go and buy some codeine instead.

When I was little, I had these really bad ear infections. Like "Hey, I'm your eardrum, watch me play how much pressure can I take before I pop! " bad.

So one time while I was in very serious pain (like, the, zomg delirous pain) due to my eardrum being past it's rated pressure and still not popping, this doctor was like "Well, I can't fix it, and it's likely your ear will self perforate.... But uh... Here, take this".

Let me tell you, trying to play Homeworld when tripping balls is really hard.

Paracetamol is acetaminophen? I'd always wondered what it was.

As far as I know codeine is the weakest opiate. Which occasionally makes me wonder what morphine and the others would do to me. So - have you ever encountered anyone who had my kind of reaction to Tylenol 3s then?

I've seen reactions like yours, Haf, but only in children. (In fairness my experience is in pediatrics.) It's hard to say what morphine might do to you. Maybe nothing (you might simply be allergic to codeine), maybe a very serious reaction like rhabdomyolysis. Hopefully you'll never be in such terrible pain that you'll have to find out!

Oh I'm definitely not allergic to codeine. I've had plenty of allergic reactions in my time and they were all unpleasant.

If my allergy to animal proteins produced sensations similar to my reaction to codeine I'd probably be the biggest meat-eater on the planet.

Oh I misunderstood. Or misremembered. For whatever reason I was under the impression your experience had been negative. That's what I get for reading threads in spasms.

Anyway, yeah, in theory any experience you had under codeine would be increased under, say, morphine. Except that if you are in such pain that you need morphine you'd probably just sleep. But you'd have weird-ass dreams!
