I got that covered too. My maternal grandmother is a descendant of the Wittelsbach family. And, er, maybe some officials from the WW2 era as well.

Nah, a few of my great uncles on my dad's side were SS members, and while a couple of them were captured and tried for various crimes, one of my crazy great uncles was never heard from again. Now they could have just killed themselves, but it's also possible they successfully escaped.

My grandad was with the Fallschirmjäger cause he was kicked out of the Luftwaffe for being a bad pilot. Obviously as the idiot son of the family, he wasn't considered too much of a problem.

 

Now I know nothing about my mum's side of the family because there aren't any male siblings for three generations back past my grandmother, and I don't actually know who my grandfather on that side is. So, I tend to see the world wars from the non-traditional side in many cases, black humor included.

This is almost the exact reverse of my situation; I don't know who my paternal grandfather was, except that he came over with his parents from Germany after WWII. It seems likely, therefore, that my great-grandparents were involved in the German war effort to some degree, which nicely mirrors my French and Judeo-Polish distaff side.

My four grandparents represent the four major players in WW2 Europe: American, English, German, and Russian. This is why I'm so conflicted all the time.

My family was American all the way back to the founding of the country, and a smattering of everything from the British Isles before that. I don't know much about what my mom's side of the family did but I know my dad's dad was an artilleryman and he had an uncle who was some kind of special forces in the Pacific. There was a story my dad told about his uncle that stuck with me because at the time it sounded badass but as I grew up I started to realize how miserable it actually was. He said that his uncle had the job of parachuting onto Japanese held islands and fucking their shit up in preparation for the full scale attack. He said when he got back the rest of his family told him he would behave differently than he remembered. That it wasn't really possible to surprise him anymore and if you did he'd probably kill you.

 

But yeah, American all the way.
