Before attending school, I learned the pronunciation of the letters H and Z to be "aitch" and "zee", respectively. While the former is commonplace in my neck of the woods, the latter is often perceived as incredibly American, with the pronunciation "zed" being the standard.

Attending a Catholic school, however, I was introduced to the alternative pronunciation of H: "haitch". While attending school, therefore, I found my use of "aitch" and "zee" declining in favor of the pronunciations preferred by my teachers and peers. When I began attending a public high school, however, my use reverted to what felt to me to be the more natural "aitch". For some reason, however, "zed" stuck with me, and today, I rarely ever catch myself using the pronunciation I first learned.

I only pronounce it haitch if I'm trying to irritate someone. Zed is a thing you shoot in the head during apocalyptic viral outbreak scenarios.

One of the big classic rock stations in Boston is WZLX. In the '90s Paul McCartney did a series of promos for them in which he pronounced it "Double-u ZED ell ex."

I guess when Paul McCartney Brit-pronounces your business name, you just roll with it.

He kind of played it up, emphasizing the ZED.

I thought that was a common thing for radio stations to do.

I say double-u. Because that's what it is. "Dubya" refers to the former president. :P

I was originally going to make the poll just for H, but tacked Z on as the other letter I thought there'd be disagreement on. It never occurred to me in my wildest imagination that anyone actually, legitimately pronounced W any other way.

I was going to add an option for non-English speakers, but I figured it would just crowd the poll.

I know, I know, I got shafted with it, too.

Still, I suppose it's a right sight better than the current approach to teaching children cursive, which is, 'Don't.'

Disclaimer: Double-post because of stupid broken quote shit and had to do a double post to respond properly.

You don't know Jersey dialect then. Double-You sounds fucking ridiculous and it takes extra time to say it. And it's not Dubya, it's Dubba-You.

edit: and it still wasn't a proper response as I quoted myself, wtf
