How will we fund the nanobots?

Nanobots are self reciprocating. So after the first one, it's free xD

Or the machines produce billions so, nanobots would necessarily be cheap.

But any cure for cancer could be a way for biological immortality.

Although not eternal youth, that would be nanobots. Also, bulletproof skin etc. would be nanobots. Turning you connective tissue, like collagen in to graphene etc.

Theoretically every living thing is immortal at the cellular level. Henrietta Lacks' stem cell line has been reproducing happily with no degradation for over six decades. If that could have been achieved in the host organism, Henrietta Lacks would still be alive and wouldn't have aged a day since 1951.

Cells can only divide so many times, the hayflick limit which is believed to be around 50-70 times before cell dies. Telomerase repairs cells and allows them to divide indefinitely.

In adults telomerase is only present in sperm and some stem cells.
In adult lobsters telomerase is found throughout most tissue.

Henrietta Lacks immortal cell was cervical cancer..... I will let that sink in :P

There are other ways to induce production of telomerase. You did say theoretically. :P

You creatures really do have bafflingly short lives, though. It's a wonder that you get anything accomplished at all.

How will we fund the nanobots?

We will tax the rich. In exchange they will be the first to receive the life-prolonging nano treatments. What they won't know is that we will actually be using them as guinea pigs to perfect the process.

I don't think that's how taxes work...

But nanobots likely won't be very expensive. The difficulty is the breakthroughs required. We need to both miniaturize electronics and some kind of mechanism to interact with DNA and then be able to produce millions of said things, likely trillions per person. Also with something this easily programmed it likely won't need to be tested on anyone.

And this is why health plans work.
