When you are typing do you leave one space after a period or two? I always learned it as two, but I recently read that this practice was related to typewriters and is therefore no longer applicable, so I made the switch to one. With the extra time I save every year I take a vacation.

Learned it as 2 spaces being correct. I really see no valid reason to change it. Let the commas have 1 space, periods deserve 2.

I use one. I wouldn't be offended if someone used two in a document, but I see no reason to.

Why only single spaces after periods then? :P

Because I am on iPad, and Apple, apparently, doesn't like 2 spaces. All the more reason to not use just 1 in my opinion.

The reason is given here, but basically it has to do with typewriters. Typewriters use monospace, meaning every letter is given the same amount of space. In that case you would use two spaces to give a more clear visual break. Computers and other devices use proportional spacing — they already assign extra space after a period automatically. Thus two spaces are not necessary.

42. I learned to type in the '80s on typewriters, so the double space was hammered into my head. People I know who are in their early to mid 30s were also taught to do so. The age of the teacher would have a lot to do with it too. I imagine there are probably a few teenagers or 20somethings out there who had older teachers who still taught the double space. The funny thing is that after all those years of it just being ingrained habit, it was not problem whatsoever to stop.

I was taught to use two during elementary and middle school, but later on teachers started saying to use one.

It depends on whether I'm writing for print or screen. If my document is intended to be printed out, I use two, if it's just on the screen, then I use one.

As I taught myself typing, I only use one. Why? Cause it seemed like a good idea at the time and it made sense.

I don't understand the question. There's only one space, and the size of it depends entirely on where I start chiseling the next letter.

I learned both, but one space is easier, so I use it.

I learned two in school, and used to use two as a result. Now I use one, because I don't see the point.
