Bernie Sanders made it official: he's running for president. I couldn't be happier. I don't think he has much chance of winning the Democratic nomination, but just having him on the debate stage with Hillary Clinton will drive the conversation to the kinds of stuff I think we should be talking about, like income inequality and the screwed up way our election system works. And who knows? He might just surprise us. After all, he is the most popular politician on Facebook by a huge margin. Maybe the zeitgeist is right for him to catch on. If nothing else, we won't be hearing about his hairstyle or what he ordered at Chipotle.

It's nice to actually have someone to vote for, instead of just choosing the least objectionable. I just went over to his website and made a donation, a first for me. So this is what it feels like to have someone to believe in. :)

Dear Conservatives,

Vote for Bernie Sanders in the primaries.

Well, whatever other reservations I have about him as I detailed in the other thread, his middle finger to Citizens United gets a big thumb's up from me.

If Bernie actually got the nomination, it would probably signal such a substantial mood swing among the electorate that he'd have a decent shot at a general. Especially if they nominate a real crazy, as it looks like they will almost certainly do. I don't think this will happen, but wouldn't ity be awesome?

What I think:

Oooh, I get to watch Jorost's hopes and dreams get crushed! Shokkou, get the popcorn, I'll bring the chocolates!

What I should think:

Naww, Jorost's got something to believe in, good for him~

Redezra, I think I've been very clear that I do not believe Bernie Sanders will get the Democratic nomination, I'm just blowing smoke and seeing castles. That said, I do believe he will push the conversation to progressive issues, things that Hillary Clinton would otherwise rather not talk about. The person Bernie's presence might ultimately help the most is Martin O'Malley, the former governor of Maryland, expected to announce soon. He is a much more progressive figure than Hillary, and he has "electability."

No matter what, it's going to be fun to watch.

Best case scenario, Hillary has a coronary halfway through the campaign, Bernie gets the nomination on a ticket with Robert Reich, and the Republicans endorse Donald Trump and Ted Cruz.

Sanders/Reich crush Trump/Cruz mid-election.

The analyst in me is well aware that nothing has changed; Hillary Clinton remains the odds-on favorite to win the Democratic nomination, and if so will likely be elected president. I would say the likelihood of that happening, right now, stands at about 75% But it's a long way to November 8th, 2016 (1 year, 6 months, 7 days to be precise, as of this writing) and a lot can change. She seemed like a shoo-in in '07, too, and then this Obama guy came along...

I'm not saying Bernie Sanders is going to take off like Obama in '08, although that would be glorious. But he could be a big enough factor to be a thorn in her side. He will win the New Hampshire primary almost by default (he is from neighboring Vermont, after all), which means Hillary Clinton is now in the position that she must win Iowa or else run the risk of losing both of the first two major Democratic contests. And remember, Iowa is a caucus; those tend to favor more liberal candidates. There is a realistic chance that Bernie Sanders could win both Iowa and New Hampshire, and then suddenly who doesn't look quite so crazy a proposition any more? Nothing succeeds like success.

Again, being realistic, I don't expect this will happen. Even if Bernie wins the first two contests (which I think is a real possibility), Hillary would win South Carolina (the third contest) and then go on to win the lion's share of the delegates on Super Tuesday and beyond. Losing the first two will be an embarrassment in the long run. But yeah, in the short run I can see Bernie having a moment. And as I have been saying, his presence will force the discussion to include stuff that Wall Street pols like the Clintons don't want to talk about. It will force her to the left. That, ultimately, will be Bernie's role in all of this.

But a boy can dream...

can't vote for him..

closed primary.. broken election system like said

ill deal with the global warming moneybag, giving free money to people who don't deserve it and breaking the constitution as long as it fixes the fucking farce our politics are.  Everyone talks about being able to return the country to the people, but we all need to realize that our current system will NEVER allow that no matter how loud our voices are or whether we're a Democrat or Republican (unless there's someone here with tons of money, which I doubt). if this guy could change it, even with everything that's wrong about him, it will at least give us a fresh start.

ben carson just got in man he's like high all the time or something.. damn good speech too.

Bernie raised $3 million online in the first 48 hours after his announcement, a breathtaking sum. Suddenly people are sitting up and taking him seriously.

I'm taking my Little Brother, age 15, to meet Bernie Sanders tomorrow at a house party in Bow, NH. I want him to be able to say he shook Bernie's hand. Maybe arm wrestle him. We'll see how it goes. More on this tomorrow night.

Wait, I'm confused. Either 'Little Brother' is code for eromenos or your parents are the most fertile people on the planet.

Please tell me it's the latter.
