There are currently more than a dozen serious potential contenders for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination. A disproportionate number of them are religious extremists, including several (Rick Perry, Mike Huckabee, and Sarah Palin, to name a few) who are avowed Christian Reconstructionists. For those of you who do not know, Christian Reconstructionism is a movement that advocates Christian domination of the levers of societal power — government, media, education, the arts, etc. In its most extreme form, it advocates a Christian theocratic dictatorship similar to that depicted in the novel The Handmaid's Tale. In the story the United States has been replaced by the Republic of Gilead, a theocratic military dictatorship. From the Wikipedia entry:
Beginning with a staged terrorist attack (blamed on Islamic extremist terrorists) that kills the President and most of Congress, a movement calling itself the "Sons of Jacob" launches a revolution and suspends the United States Constitution under the pretext of restoring order. They are quickly able to take away all of women's rights, largely attributed to financial records being stored electronically and labelled by gender. The new regime moves quickly to consolidate its power and reorganize society along a new militarized, hierarchical, compulsorily Christian regime of Old Testament-inspired social and religious ultra-conservatism among its newly created social classes. In this society, almost all women are forbidden to read.
Don't get me wrong. I don't think that such a scenario is likely. I would never tempt fate by calling it impossible, however. There are real-life politicians in real-life elected office who would LOVE to see something like this happen (Michele Bachmann and Sam Brownback come to mind), but fortunately for society they are in the minority. Still. It is not difficult to concoct a scenario in which some catastrophe or series of catastrophes lead to a breakdown of the social order. Again, not likely, but not impossible. In such situations far-right demagogues often rise to the top. We saw it happen in the 1930s in the United States, although it's a slice of history largely forgotten today. I'm not saying America is going to become a far-right dictatorship; I'm just saying if it did it would probably be a far-right Christian dictatorship, like the Christian Reconstructionists want.
Bottom line: Backup your porn.
