Jelly: Closest translation is what the US would call Jello. Transparent gelatinous object. Not always edible.

We don't really say "jam" very much around here, unless we mean the DJ is dropping mad beats. Usually it's "preserves" if it has chunks of fruit. If not it's "jelly."

I just realized I didn't actually post, but this, with the result of the second option.

I'd completely forgotten that jelly was the normal non-American term for jello, as ubiquitous as that trademark has become here. The generic term for jello here is 'gelatinous pudding,' which sounds just so appetizing no one can bear to use it, so jello it is. Presumably 'jelly' never got a chance at it because it already meant the preserve.

It never actually occurred to me that anyone would normally say 'preserve,' though. It has the sort of technical connotation here that words like 'watercraft' do, and so is only used in cases such as I have here, to group jams, jellies, and marmalades together.

It gets even more interesting when you get to know that jelly refers to anything resembling a gelatinous pudding in texture... soo say a gelatinous paste used as some kind of industrial lubricant would be considered a "Jelly"

I like to use personal lubricants as personal lubricants. Industrial lube isn't so good.

There's preserves, jam and jelly. The order of chunkiness from low to high is jelly-jam-preserves. All are their own entities. I'd eat preserves as like a topping for ice-cream, but not mixed with peanut butter on a sandwich, cuz that's just nasty. PB must go with jelly, period.

I was under the impression Americans drink iced tea without sugar.

Yet another example of two countries divided by a common language.  Jello ® is a trade-marked name of a particular gelatinous and wholly unremarkable commercial product.  Jelly, jam and preserves are methods of preparing fruits for canning.  Ice tea is served here either sweet or unsweet but nearly always with lemon.
