welp, it sucks to have to make this topic yet again, but here we are...

 

Putin recently said the world is going to descend into anarchy and that's not so far-fetched.

 

you got the guy here by me who snipered the cop,

 

you got the guy with the hatchet attacking a NYC cop.

 

you got this school shooting.

 

you got the people getting killed in Canada.

 

People are fed the fuck up.

This is in no way not tragic. 

 

But, there are over 10,000 homicides a year in the U.S.; I don't mean to trivialize the death of anyone, but, I just mean to express the magnitude of everything else. It's still bad, but this by itself is not an indication that things are getting much worse.

It does seem as if a conglomeration of "bad news" events has occurred lately. Partly it's media created, as in the hysteria over Ebola (which supplanted the hysteria over enterovirus D68). Partly it's coincidence. But at least part of it is also the result of historical forces moving toward... Something. There's something in the air. I've been saying for some time that we are on the verge of great change. Those aren't just empty words (as when every politician in the world says them). I really believe it. I also believe that this change will ultimately be for the good. But transitions are often painful. It will get worse before it gets better.

I'm about 30 minutes away from the school. My girlfriend's sister is a student there, and she's more than a little wigged the fuck out. It's been pretty stressful, and there's media goddamned everywhere.

Last Friday we did our "safe in place" drill at the elementary school where I work. This is basically a euphemistic way of saying "practice for an armed intruder." Unfortunately the entire system is built upon the idea that someone in the front office will be able to make a "safe in place" call over the PA system, and since the front office is the first place an armed intruder would come to... Well, you see the problem. My office is the next one around the corner, so I just assume that in the event of an armed intruder I will have to fight him in single combat.
