I like Limewire. But to be honest I mostly use file sharing for music, and I just buy most of my music from iTunes now. For a buck or so I'd just as soon have a clean copy.

Paid? A newsbins service.
Free? A torrent service.

Welp, in that case you're boned :D

Torrents are the main free way of getting software. Newsbins varies between $50-100 a year (can't remember how much), but it is currently the best filesharing method available.

There are other free ways (kazaa, emule, etc), but they mostly suck compared to torrents.

Are specific type of software you're looking for? If it's just music there are many easy ways of getting it without any filesharing software. Movies are a little trickier, but easily manageable if you know the right areas. Actual pieces of software (programs, games, and such) you'd need a filesharing method.

For specific torrent systems, I used to use azureus (IIRC it's now called vuze), but that was maybe 5 years ago. It had a method of adding blacklists to prevent you from being traced, quite effective. But I haven't torrented in a long time, so I may be a bit out of date.

Yeah I just want something easy to use with a simple interface really, that is safe (as safe as P2P can be). I used limewire because it was easy and simple.

If you're just looking to download music files, go here. Enter the name of the song you want and it takes you to some Russian site where you can get it for free. I've rarely had any trouble finding a song, and the quality has been great.

Might I suggest, none?

I received a letter from my ISP for copyright infringement.

Of course, I played it off as I had an unsecured wireless router, which I told them I now secured. But, either way, I'm done with that now.

You need better security :D
Newsbins camouflages the traffic, so ISP's never know. You can also alter your router's settings and make your ISP think it's coming from the guy across the street.

Also, unless the ISP mentioned specifics in the letter (you downloaded Inception on 11/11/10 using this torrent service, etc), or stuff along those lines, they are generally bluffing. They just noticed your very high internet usage for long periods and put two and two together, but they have no hard proof.

But yeah, I don't use torretns because of the risk myself, I grab stuff from other places online.

Or you can just make sure you do your illegal downloading from some other IP, like a public WiFi, etc. STICK IT TO THE MAN!

Most public WiFis block all the ports needed by the torrent protocol.

You guys get letters from your ISPs? Man if any Canadian broadband provider did that they'd be out of business overnight.

I'm sure the letters are just to cover their own asses.

I don't use torrents very often, I find them way too clunky. But I have been able to do so from the WiFi at Panera Bread. I have also downloaded music there from that Russian site I referenced above.

Wow, your ISP is being a real hardass about it then. Have ISPs been sued over file sharing? Because if so then they would obviously want to cover themselves. Also, is yours a small ISP? I wouldn't think a big guy like Comcast would want to spend the resources to track down each and every individual case of file sharing and send them a letter, there would be so many.

Use a proxy tunnel or some other means of changing your IP, then use a different file sharing service then the one that got you in trouble. If I ever download anything it's with torrents though, personally.

Ah, they got you then. If you ever did go back to (illegal) filesharing you'd either need to switch ISPs or get a paid service and/or proxy.

Nasty. Just out of curiosity, which ISP was it?

PenTeleData. Also, it's seems like Paramount Pictures are the only ones who cared. I downloaded about 10 movies before getting that letter.

I'll scan the letter in a second.Attached File  scan1.jpg   495.05K   18 downloads
