Ahh I see the plan worked.

Also, Windows. Mac on occasions, but mainly Windows.

Well, A) I wasn't aware Windows was based on unix (probably because I don't think it was) and B) no, none of those are Unix. Mac is based on some bsd which itself was based on unix. It's a long tree, but don't try to say that mac is unix because it's not.

BSD is a branch of Unix. (The other branch is System V.) Linux is merely a Unix-like operating system. But BSD is real Unix, and OS X is a BSD.

Windows uses the BSD socket code. As far as I know, that's all it has from Unix. It uses a good chunk of VMS code though, a lot of the early NT developers were former VMS developers, and the virtual memory systems are basically the same (except that Intel didn't put in the hardware support for virtual memory on the CPU that the old VAX machines had).

Anything that has "files" is Unix based. Period.

Anything that has "files" is Unix based. Period.

Anything that is wide and hard and made for cars/wagons to travel on is a cobble-stone road. Period.

Maybe you see now how stupid that sounds.

Uh, files kinda predate Unix. Like going back to the '60s at least. You might want to rethink that. B-)

...

Okay, lets try this way.

Before Unix, there were boring files.

Then Unix came and introduced the file structure. Everything was a file. Monitor? File. Hard drive? File. Keyboard? File. Network connection? File. File? File.

It also had a rather signature way of organising the drive, with /, /boot, /var, /etc, /bin, /include, /home, etc.

Linux has all of these, but it's the direct evolution of Unix.

BSD, has all of these, but that's because it's a fork of Unix.

Mac has quite a number of these, because it's based on BSD and therefore a decendant of a fork of Unix.

Windows is probably the only one of the big three that is arguably non-nix, but it's really really complicated and they took a lot of Nix stuff when NT rolled around.

Mac OS X isn't based on BSD. It's BSD. The core code is all BSD; it uses the BSD init structure, cron, everything.

Linux isn't an evolution of Unix. When Linus was writing it he had no access to Unix, and did a lot of reinventing of the wheel. He was essentially just trying to make a kernel that would run GNU utilities because that's all he had access to. But it's really a new thing, not a straightforward evolution.

Sure it was written in a clean room environment with no access to Unix, but it runs everything that is Unix.

.... However if that makes Linux an evolution of Unix, that would make WINE an evolution of Windows. I get your point.

It runs most things that are Unix. Partly that's because of its success; anyone wanting to make *nix-type applications nowadays (outside of the Mac world where you still have a lot of proprietary applications, generally running under Aqua) will want to make them run on Linux, because that's the largest single market. So Oracle runs on Linux.

But it wasn't always like that; back in the day, when Solaris and the others ruled the roost. And when you get into the hairy world of kernel extensions and the like everything's still kernel-specific, and there's an awful lot of code out there that is in that category.

Files shmiles

I started on an Apple II.

it's a disgrace what Apple has become though. It's sad that a company that I used to tout and defend has turned into a company that I bash and advise people to keep away from.

Solaris is cool, it does parallel processing awesomely.
