I don't know what it's like in you people's parts of the country, but if there's ever a mass evacuation in my area NY/NJ/PA, no one is going anywhere. A single car being in an accident causes a massive traffic jam. Really need to get away from any urban center.

Can you imagine?

My plan is to form a group of people in PA and should the need ever happen (i.e. floods on the coast, NYC getting bombed, etc.), we all commit to blowing up the bridges that come into PA.

It's basically the same where I live.  If there were ever a mass evacuation the roads would quickly become impassable.  There's a nuclear power plant in nearby Seabrook, NH, and one of the phrases you'll often see on signs and bumper stickers around here is "NO EVACUATION POSSIBLE," referring to the possibility of a meltdown or other large-scale accident.  After 9/11 people got paranoid about a terrorist attack.  The idea that terrorists would target a pissant little nuke plant like Seabrook struck me at the time (and still strikes me) as incredibly unlikely and not worth worrying about, but no one wants to hear that.  People like to obsess about that sort of thing.

hmm yea, I've never seen people that scared of nuke plants that they would go and make bumper stickers..

I'm guessing it's because of your proximity and environmental freaks (because there's sure lots of them).

There's one really close to me that's on the Delaware river, I don't think it's three mile island though.. but if I google maps and scroll down the river, I can find it..  it's actually only 15 mins away.

Nobody wants anything in their back yard.  Everyone cries that we need more power plants or prisons or affordable housing, but actually try building any of that stuff and see how quickly the local populace rises up in outrage.

if nobody wanted anything like "that" in their backyard, it wouldn't exist. the problem is you are forced to having it in your backyard.

I live 10 miles east of a nuclear plant (in direct path of fallout from prevalent wind direction). While if the plant, which is right on the shore of Lake Erie, we're to be hit, I would pretty much be fucked either way. The only way I possibly survive is if I am at work when it goes up. Even then only being 5 miles west of the thing I would still most likely be fucked.

As far as evacuations are concerned, I live in an area that is a mixture of small towns and farm/nursery land. Interstate 90 is a mile south of my house and I easily get there if given adequate time. I am fortunate that my entire county is half the population of the closest major city (Cleveland) and could easily be in New York within 3 hours with even moderate traffic.

I would also be fine with this, as long as it's not a Russian/Soviet model. :P

Thus why the nuclear power plant. The cleanest form of power behind renewables. Arguably even better than hydro for the environment, as they do less damage to fish.

I am of the opinion that if you call yourself an environmentalist and are against nuclear power, you're a hypocrite.

I was going to say a bunch of stuff, but everyone said it already.

Australia has one of the largest stockpiles of uranium, a massive, uninhabitable, wasteland where we can store the waste, and we also are the inventors of Synrock, which the gold standard of long term high grade nuclear waste storage. We should be using nuclear power instead of coal, but nooooooooooooooo, apparently that's too dangerous for us.

You're also a hypocrite if you're against fracking..

Hydraulic fracturing of rock formations is not just used to extract oil and gas. It is also used to stimulate production from water wells, to enhance geothermal production of electricity and, most surprisingly of all, used by the EPA to clean up superfund sites.

Well, my problem with fracking is the use of drinking water, or the use of toxic substances in porous rock near a used water table or aquifer.

Or, alternatively, companies skimping on geological surveys and destabilizing soluble crust structures, causing sinkholes and cave ins and... well all sorts of unpredictable shit.

So it's useful, but it's usually implemented in a dodgy as all fuck fashion by many companies due to low regulation and next to no oversight.

Oh, not to mention YOU SHOULDN'T BE USING OIL OR GAS IN THE GOD DAMN FIRST PLACE SO THERE SHOULD BE NO MARKET FOR THIS SHIT.

Hey, I'm all for alternative forms of energy. The problem is they rape you on the cost of them. I'm sure they don't cost nearly amount they charge you for it. They merely try to take advantage of people by gouging them. Once they stop that, sure I'll go to wind/solar/whatever.

It's just like food: say organic/all natural/etc. Doesn't cost any more to produce then the others, but they charge more because they know there's stupid rich environmental whatever people who will pay the price. Make it mainstream and I'm all in.

Problem is your power companies are private and can charge what they like. I mean, a public utility would be able to absorb the transition costs with cash from the federal budget. Just don't spend it on, say, subsidies for fossil fuels.
