Clearly only one option here, and that is 10th doctor.

David Tennent(sp) is by far the best.

Christopher Eckleston(damn brits and their funny last names) is a very close second.

I'd choose Peter Davison (#5), my favorite as a kid.

It's complicated for me.

Tom Baker (#4) had most of my favourite episodes and my favourite companions, Leela and K9. My favourite individual story is Trial of a Time Lord, with Colin Baker (#6). However as an actor I love Jon Pertwee (#3). He only had a few really great stories but ... I just loved the whole Bessie shtick. It was great. B)

I should also note here that I like David Tennant, I think he's a good actor. But I don't like the new Doctor Who. Part of what I liked about the old show was the extended story format, where each story consisted of multiple 45-minute episodes (usually 2 to 4 episodes). The new shows always feel rushed to me: they're trying to cram into a one-hour-minus-advertising time span the old stories and it doesn't really work.

In classic Doctor Who (1963-1989) most stories consisted of four 25-minute episodes.  There were a couple two-parters and a couple six-parters, but usually it was four.  In the US, though, they were often shown all at once like a movie.  One local channel aired them in their original 25-minute format weeknights at 7:30, but I hated watching it like that.  I preferred getting the whole story all at once.

The current series episodes are 45 minutes, but they often tie together, so that two or three episodes make a complete story arc.  I prefer the current system.

Oh yeah, that's right, I forgot about the 25-minute thing. But all of the stories were always an even number of episodes, 4,6 or 8 were the most common.

The episodes I saw - and I watched most of the Tennant shows - were all pretty much standalone. Which is, like, sigh, if I wanted that I would just watch Star Trek instead.

Tennant had fewer stand-alones as the series progressed.  The problem, to me, with the old 25-minute episodes was that the pacing was often stretched out to accommodate the format -- every episode had to end on a cliffhanger.

I have to admit I love the insane repeating cliffhangers. It adds to the charm of the show. B)

I think the big thing for me was that I wanted to see a complete story from beginning to end.  I always hated "to be continued."  Still do!

Well, I watched Doctor Who on MPBN, the Maine PBS station, which showed one complete story every Saturday for many years.

However I'm also a fan of 24 which might be the most "To Be Continued" type show in history. B)

The annoying thing about the modern two parters is the first episode always ends in some very very dangerous place. But you always know it will be resolved in the first 30 seconds in the second episode and then it will be calm and relaxed again for half an hour.

To be fair, that's a common disease by no means restricted to Doctor Who. It's one of the reasons I liked 24 was because it didn't do that.

(Netflix picked up 24 recently and I've been watching it again.)

I'm surprised of the lack of Tom Baker love. I guess I'm the only oldschool Who fan left here, and I'm peculiar because unlike most oldschool Who fans he's not my favourite.

I watched Doctor Who on New Hampshire public television, WMUR in Manchester, which also did the Saturday thing.  There were probably afternoons when you and I were watching broadcasts that originated not so far apart from each other, Haf.

I like Tom Baker, and if I were trying to be objective I'd probably say he was the best.  He was certainly the one who brought the show to worldwide attention and gave it its legendary status.  But Peter Davison was my Doctor, the first one I watched and loved.  Tennant's Doctor summed up my feelings nicely when he met Davison's Doctor:
