It's a time thing. If you'd posted this poll in 1991 probably Gruber would have won hands down. But now he and Lecter get no votes.

Yuh.  It's an unfair poll anyway.  How do you quantify something like "best villain?"  But it's a good forum topic. 

 

And yes, Alan Rickman is very good as Snape.

Heh, I wonder how he'd have done if you'd listed him as Snape instead of Gruber. Although from what I read about it, which admittedly was pretty brief, he's not quite as much of an archetypal villain in the Snape role, more a fallen from grace type villain character. Gruber and the Sheriff are just pure out and out nasty.

Yeah, I didn't include Snape because although he was an asshole, in the end he proved not to be a villain.

Although I'm a fan of The Joker (clearly), I have to go with Dr. Lecter.

He's the only bad guy you ever want to win.
